Now as a “responsible adult” with the ability to cook and disposable income to go out to eat, it is not a slim of a choice as it was in college, but I was curious if anyone else had any go to places for Friday’s during lent when they were in college.
1. Petty’s catfish poboy. If I had the money that was always top choice.
2. Papa John’s thin crust cheese pizza.
3. Popeyes shrimp tackle box add a large order of Red Beans and Rice.
4. Taco Bell bean burritos no onions.
5. China garden sweet and sour shrimp and shrimp fried rice on the Buffet.
6. Crawfish if anyone had good prices.

Broke. PB&J and chips or just Milwaukee’s Best and Winston lights.

I only went to Captain D’s one time when I was a Freshman because i was riding with people that wanted it and bit into an undercooked fish filet so I never could go back. Also never did the fish sandwiches at fast food places.

Danvers for a cheap burger
Bulldog Deli chips & rotel dip for 1.99 plus tax
Shoney's breakfast bar on the weekend (just before the Baptists got outta church on Sunday) - could be your one Sunday meal

I’m not Catholic but the guy I ate lunch with during my working years was so I usually ate a Filet-O- Fish every Friday with him so he didn’t have to sit there and watch me eat a Big Mac. Some fridays we’d go to a local place for catfish.

My Cajun/catholic buddy would spend Friday's eating either crawfish or filet o fish from McD. He'd then buy whatever meat lovers pizza was on sale in town before we hit up bars. He'd leave the pizza in the oven and when we'd get back he'd pop the oven on for a few minutes and take it down.

Friday's were a big sacrifice for him clearly.

Reminds me of talking to a Muslim dude about Ramadan. He said they can’t eat anything from sunrise to sunset (&it’s in the summer so long days). But they’ll have a big early breakfast & a huge meal right when the sun goes down. He said many of them actually gain weight that month.

Oh yeah. I've worked with a lot of Muslims who were serious about their fast. I never was that impressed with the eating part - as you said big breakfast/lunch. But not even taking a sip of water? No way I could make it through a day without at least a few sips of water.

Funny you mention Filet-O-Fish and Big Mac as one of the odd things I do is my annual trip to McD's get one of each and a fry for dinner. 🤷‍♂️

I'm not Catholic either and this topic always takes me back to 6th grade when I became aware we had fish sticks for lunch every Friday because "Catholic's didn't eat meat on Friday" for some reason. Never thought much about it other wise but it did create a life long love for fish sticks. I'll still buy a bag and some tater tots every now and again and chow down.

When I lived in Cincinnati (bigly Catholic) I loved this time of year as just about every Catholic church in the area had a fish fry on Friday. Had a church across the street from us and couldn't wait to get home from work "early" to get in line. Bit of a cultural phenomenon and can't imagine the money they made but it was the place to be and thing to do. Damn good too.

Ramadan dates shift each year.

It started earlier this week this year and ends on March 19.

Next year, it’ll be February 7 — March 8…

We had a guy that said he had proof that the standard Jackson Public School fish fillets were shark meat. It really wouldn't surprise me.

Some of the rich Kuwaitis would spend Ramadan in the US or England. The way they interpreted it was the fasting period was daylight hours in Kuwait which more or less lined up with sleeping hours in the US. Therefore, they were asleep for much of the fasting period.

Hadad isn’t Cajun. Must be one of the LSU Agostinellis.

They find a lot of exceptions & workarounds. If taken literally a Muslim north of the arctic circle would be screwed.

We weren’t catholic but I do enjoy some catfish. The Templeton cafeteria always had it on Friday and it was really good. If you already had a meal plan it was already great deal.
