OT: College recruiting (students rather than athletes)

My son (HS junior) receives random recruiting letters from schools across the country. He has never received anything from State but he has received at least 4 letters/cards from Mississippi since May. I know of another HS senior that has grown up a State fan but, as of right now, has been turned to the dark side.

My son may not end up at State but I would be shocked if he ended up at Mississippi.

I'm curious if these are isolated cases or any of y'all have experienced anything similar.

Where do you live? I heard that MSU had been doing very well in Memphis a few years ago, but haven't heard anything else.

A while back, I knew the top student in the state. Certified genius. Top ACT & SAT in Mississippi. He didn't hear a word from MSU.

State definately needs to tighten up in this department.
My daughter is a 4.0 student. As well as child of 2 consecutive generations (mostly) of state graduates.
One side is a a pretty major donor to the school. (Big enough somebody usually comes by our tailgate to make sure everything is ok. Alcorn games was Coach Fanning)
Point being my daughter seemed to be receiving invitations to every school EXCEPT State.
My Wife called them to light a fire.
Still OM still is sending 2-1 what State sends. Vanderbilt, Ark, and LSU sends about as much mail to our house as State does (neither of which of us are alumni

I'm at State right now. Made a very high ACT score and had a 4.0. I probably got one piece of mail from MSU for every 3 or 4 pieces Ole Miss sent me, and I didn't apply to them or anything. I just assumed they weren't worried about me because I've been a verbal commit since I was 4***

My son is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and has a 4.0. MSU has been sending him at least 4-5 pieces of mail a week. They also call him on his cell phone and encourage him to take visits. He has also received personal letters from Mark Keenum and the Honors College. I have heard these sort of complaints on this board before, and, I have to tell you, they have been nothing but great.

I live in Katy, TX (burb of Houston) and have a coworker that has a son...

graduating this year. She told me that her son gets more stuff from MSU than anyone...something almost every week. Of course I know that MSU now has 2 full time recruiters in TX this year, so hopefully it is working.

Because I bet it's all about the recruiters in the area. I'm guessing the ones in MS get slack at times because they think everyone is dying to go to MSU.

Do you guys want to change this? Get involved with your local alumni association. ***** about it on message boards all you want, but don't limit it to that. Go talk to these AAs, help with send-off parties, send emails, make your voice heard.

Both my kids got form letters from MSU. Actually, two each, because they address one to their first name and another one to their middle name.

When my daughter visited Ole Miss last fall, she was impressed with how much they tried to sell their school. However, she thought everyone saying "Hotty Toddy" to each other the way normal human beings say "hello" was The Ghey.

My daughter is leaning towards USM, but now Texas Wesleyan is piquing her interest.

They are beginning to be active at college prep high schools in the St Louis area

Personally, I think state has better selling points to high school grads than TSUN. It would be neat if State had post-grad statistics with students who have full-time jobs with solid salaries (meaning non-high school or GED level). They tell future students that this % of these majors got great jobs from State. With all the engineering, accounting, agriculture, veterinarian school, etc, I think we produce more grads with real jobs vs. the TSUN english major/pre-law degree working at Cups or starbucks. So State should sell job potential and sell it well to upcoming high school grads who are looking at a weak economy.

It truly think it's hit and miss. They're really inconsistent. When I graduated we had I think 2 national merit finalists and Ole Miss sent them Ole Miss The North Face backpacks and rode their dick for like 6 months following that. My valedictorian got a full ride offer from 3 impressive nationally known private colleges and didn't hear a word from any Mississippi school except Millsaps.

I live in New York now and my little sister is #1 in her class as a junior on track to finish with an IB degree and gets letters from every school on the east coast. MSU needs to step it up.

Your son needs to complete the scholarship resume as part of the application process (when he can). And, he needs to get to know his local MSU recruiter and research the available scholarships. You cannot sit back - you have to work at it. OM does recruit well and looks to have more scholarship money - especially thru the Honors College. However, after my daughter got offered a full academic scholarship to OM, State (thru the recruiter who we got to know well) got close to that will several different scholarships. She got tons of letters from many other schools, but those are just letters. She did get more letters from OM, but her recruiter personally contacted her often and that made the difference. (She is at State - and loves her choice.)

Mine is a Sr in HS, solid 3.0+ student and gets something almost daily from MSU. She hasn't been to any career days, etc but sent her ACT score (24) and they constantly mail stuff and call. She has been approved for admissions and got a letter last week about amount of scholarship she will be offered. I've got no complaints.

My daughter is a highly sought after high school senior. The amount of mail she receives daily in unbelievable. About equal from State and Ole Miss. But she has just about made her mind up to go to MSU. The Honor's College at State is very, very nice.

I teach in rural Southeast Alabama between Auburn and the GA state line.

There was a college fair for the seniors at our school and I noticed that MSU had representatives there and have also sent flyers and posters to the school I teach at to post around the school. I was actually kind of shocked to see us have reps there and to see us send so much stuff to our school because I can't imagine that MSU gets many, if any, students from this part of Alabama.

I teach at a 5A school that doesn't really have any MSU connections that I have been able to find. I'm the only MSU fan that I've seen, but I have noticed that a few kids have asked me about MSU and have inquired about going to MSU. Trying to steer as many as I can to MSU.

It's really nice to see us branching out like this. They did a not so great job recruiting Bham when I was in high school from 2002-2006, then they realized they needed to hammer that area hard and they finally have. I know the marching band is hitting it hard because I was one of 8 or 9 kids that came in from the Bham area my freshman year in 2006 and they realized there were quality people in the Bham area and they needed to hit the ground hard there.

With Alabama and Auburn raising their standards and being more selective about who gets in, I think MSU can get a decent number of kids from the state of Alabama that are quality kids that will do great things for MSU academically. Nice to see them hitting this rural area I teach in.
