I have a fairly new HP rig with Norton. My home page has been Yahoo for no particular reason. My computer had gotten very slow, to the point I took the tower to a local guru. I explained that it took a long time for internet sites to come up (the wait seemed to be caused by waiting for ads to come up), plus every once in a while my screen would lock up and go pale. I could still see the text, pictures, whatever, but it was frozen. I would have to do the control/alt/delete thing to get out of everything and start over. He kept it for a couple of days and then called me in. "I fixed a couple of little things...mumble mumble... didn't find much wrong...mumble mumble...that'll be $40 please." Then, and I really don't remember why, I changed my home page from Yahoo to AOL, and everything is suddenly much faster. Is this coincidence or did I accidently do something right? Did hiring our new coach lift the jinx of the Indian Burial Ground? Other? Anybody have any educated guesses?

1. Backup everything you value on your main HD.
2. Reload Windows.
3. Stop viewing porn.

but in his case... he does sound like he's someone that needs something more... simple.

They're fantastic ... rarely have problems. And they'll do anything a PC will do, and do it dependably. I'm not a programmer, nor do I want to be, so there may be some reason for needing a PC, but if so I'm not aware of it.<div>

Mac converts always kill me. Likely, when purchasing a PC, they were spending anywhere from 5-600 dollars on an e-machine or low-end Dell/Gateway at Best Buy thinking they could get a deal and then get pissed when it's slow 2 years later. Then they spend 1500-2000 dollars on a mac and it's amazingly faster and better and lasts longer. If you spend that much on a PC it will be amazingly fast and last longer as well.

By the way, outside of software development, my poor Windows 7 OS PC runs any game made in the last 3 years better than anything on a Mac, because nobody has Macs so they don't rush to make Mac versions of games. It's hilarious to go into a mac store and see games that are 5 bucks on a PC because they've been out for so long are still 30-50 dollars on a mac because they are brand new.

An example is Bioshock 2. New in stores for Mac! Been out for PC for TWO YEARS LOL!!

First, I cook give a **** how great a PC plays games. Not looking for that. To your other statement about spending that much money on a PC and it working the same is a load of **** too. You spend all that money on a PC, you still have a ****** operating system that cannot work well with itself, much less any other software that you plan on using on your machine.

Macs are not for everyone, but for those that want a machine that works well, fast, and is backed by the best customer support in the business, they are great. If you don't like any of that stuff, no problem. If you go out and spend the same amount on a PC that you could to buy a mac and are not into programming or killing zombies on your computer, I would suggest having your head examined. The only attraction of a PC is that they are cheap PERIOD.

But seriously, computers can be very very finicky, especially when it comes to web browsers. For example, I was having a problem with my computer where it would lock up sometimes when I tried to fast user switch or log out of my account, but it had no problems with my wife's account. Turns out it was the google voice plugin that only my web browser used that was causing the lock up. And the plugin would only load up when I accessed my gmail account. You might have something that loads up whenever your browser launches or a certain webpage is accessed. To find out, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, click "Task Manager," and go over to the processes tab. Do this right after you log in to windows. Start up your web browser and pay attention to what new processes start. If some process loads up after visiting a certain page and it causes a slowdown or problem, it's probably the culprit.

...then why the hell would you need to spend $2K on a Mac? with Sandy Bridge, games are the only reason to need a video card, and without that you can get a PC for $500-700 that equals a $2K Mac.

then again, if you do want to play games, you can get a PC for that for $1K, instead of a Mac for $2K.

I agree with the other poster: I think most of the Mac Myth comes from the under-chipped under-RAMed budget puters at Best Buy.

Dell XPS loaded up with memory. I just reloaded Windows for the 2nd time and it works great.
Then again, I know how to keep a PC protected and if it's broke, how to fix it.

I never bought into all of the Mac hype until I used a friend's macbook pro a few times. I get a new top of the line Lenovo desktop and laptop every two years and they do not compare to my Macbook pro. Some of our company applications are not compatible with the mac, so I have to use the PCs for work.

Windows 7 is pretty solid. You just have to be aware of and follow the "every other" rule with Microsoft.

Windows 95 - For it's time it was great - changed computing as we know it

Windows 98 - Had its problems

98SE - Very strong OS

Windows ME - ****** would be giving it too much credit

XP - Extremely Strong

Vista - See ME

Windows 7 - Love it

Both are acceptable for programming or home use.

There is really nothing that either one can do that the other can't. They both take the same kind of internal hardware. The main difference I see is that Apple products just cost more. To me they aren't more reliable, as I have had problems/issues with both, but never anything major.

As far as your problem, I would just get rid of a home page all together.
Install Firefox and set it as your primary browser.
Install the Adblock plus add on for FireFox.
Never install any toolbar. Most free software you download will try to download extra free programs such as a new anti virus or some kind of toolbar. Never do this. You don't need it.
Quit using Norton, and use Microsoft Security Essentials (assuming you have Windows 7 or Vista). This is free, but has to be downloaded from Microsoft. This is the best antivirus for Windows right now.
