Old school here. So I'm just reacting to the LSU - Iowa woman's dustup...and expanding it.

Do we really need hand gestures after every made 3, layup, block, dunk? IMO I'd rather have that energy spent on the current play or the next play.

I don't like or respond to the chest pounding, finger wagging charades that athletes have been using to expand their emotional depth.

i do like old school: SCOREBOARD!

MO
PS Same feelings toward NFL, NCAA Football, MLB and any other sport that uses this as an emotional crutch to watching the game: Now... get off my lawn!

Personally I think that you would allow me on your lawn. I didn't even see the women's basketball issue but I've seen enough in all sports to imagine what happened.
Did you ever see the Youtube videos talking about Larry Bird and his trash talking? I saw Bird throughout his career and didn't know that he was one of the biggest trash talkers in the NBA. You know why? Usually his trash talk was just between him and his opponent. He didn't feel the need to show it for all to see.
My favorite Larry Bird story.

I'm old school too and think the right way to do it is the Larry Bird/MJ way where nobody but they guy you're talking to knows.

But the kids, social media, sports media, they eat the other **** up. I'm sure Angel Reese gained thousands of Instagram followers because of that, and that's $$$ for her.

I'm not a fan of that sort of thing but that's the world we live in today.

- the hand gestures after a 3 just seem silly to me. Celebrating a 3 just seems like you’re so excited/ surprised it actually went it in !! LOL

Now I get the emotion after a monster slam (particularly if they posterize someone) - the adrenaline rush leads to the celebration - I can see that

But a made 3? Come on, act like you’ve been there.

With that said: the self-congratulatory antics don’t really bother me at all, I really don’t pay attention to them, but if you ask me about my opinion on them my answer is the above - that they’re kinda silly

What I DO have a problem with his taunting of the opponent- no place for that in sports

Can hardly wait for some team to start hand gestures. trash talk, pounding the chest and the rest of the hip hop culture when they make a free throw!

PS I'm not kidding....someone will push the envelope further just to do it.

I think the big balls gesture is OK, but it is a fool's errand to wait for manners and civility

On the bright side happily the "throat slashing" and the "three to the head" gestures have been banned.
It seemed like those two were pretty rampant.

I don’t like it but I don’t get mad at it either.
Back on the day taunting usually led to fights so it’s probably better if they curb it somehow.

Now to contradict myself I miss all of the great fights in Hockey. These guys are so talented now nobody wants to break a hand or get hit in the face and I don’t blame them. But I liked a quick fight that got broken up before any real damage was done. Got the teams pumped up and the fans loved it.
