I am looking to purchase an older 1 story home that has no HVAC system - no ducts, anything. What kind of costs/delays I am looking at to put one in? In my mind, $6k seems about right but I could be way off.

I just put a new evaporator coil and condenser coil in my house. The 5-Ton, 13-SEER condenser coil (with compressor) ran right around $2,500 while the evap coil (with plenum) ran me close to $1,200. These prices included installation and refrigerant (jobs were done about 1-year apart).

Keep in mind, this was for a 2-story home in Houston and no duct work was involved.

yrs ago, with a 5 year compressor warranty it was roughly $5 grand. That was a 5 ton unit that takes car of about 2K ft2.

tonnage of the unit......Another factor is number of rooms the duct work has to be ran too............I can tell you this, as I've flipped a couple of houses, best to shop around and get two or three quotes.........I've had quotes that were as much as $2000 difference.........</p>

A couple of years ago I did a first floor addition, and replaced both upstairs and downstairs units. Not sure if you're getting both heating and cooling, or just cooling, but I had two complete Rheem 16 SEER heat pump units with 2-speed compressors installed, and some minimal duct work, for a total cost of $10K. Both are split systems. They really work well and are very quiet both inside and outside the house.

Your cost will be increased by the need to run new duct work, which is dependent upon access to locate the main ducts, air returns, and the individual runs. I pay about $150/year for the company to come and clean/service everything to maintain a 10-year service and parts warranty.

Talked to several ME's that do our consulting work and they highly recommended Trane. Went with a Trane 14 seer 4 ton. Original unit was a 10 seer 3.5 ton York system that was 19 years old and was leaking freon. Had old insulation removed from ductwork. They sealed the ductwork, replaced all insulation, and replaced 4 floor registers with larger ones. This cost me 9,500.00 but was well worth it. Also I'm all electric so I have a heat pump, which costs a little more. Trane has a good warranty.

On 2200 sf you would need multiple mini-splits to be able to control the temperature in the house. Your best bet is to install a complete system with duct work. There are two many missing variables to give you a good number. Your heat load and square footage will determine what size unit you will need. With the newer units that are on the market, most have the same warranty with some offering lifetime replacement on the condenser for a small fee. Knowing that you will probably need power pulled to where ever you want to place the units inside and out, copper tubing, thermostat and wire plus the duct work you are probably looking in the $7,500 range. Back in October I replaced a 4 ton gas furnace with a 4 ton 16 seer heat pump, copper and thermostat and just the equipment was $4,400.

I know a guy. Google AC Doctors in Brandon. Does stuff right. Won't cut corners even if it would earn him service calls in the future. Real smart guy that knows his stuff.
