Going to Greece in May and planning some extra time before/after. Considering Cyprus - any info on the island would be appreciated. I know about the Greek/Turk split.

don't waste your time to be honest
some nice things to see if you must go but I was there in September and would pass

I'd spend more time in Greece or cut Cyprus altogether and do Israel and or Turkey

A lot of Russian tourists … I was there on business and was underwhelmed by the beaches. There is some history and historical sites/ruins, but nothing remarkable. Best grilled octopus I ever had.

Agree - Gaza is probably a better destination.
can still go to Israel, I know people that have gone. many of the holy sites are unaffected and large beach areas are almost normal which is surprising. Israel could use the money and support unless you don't like Jews

That's a weird statement unless you thinks it's unreasonable to not want to go to a country that is actively having missiles fired at it.

Last part is complete BS my friend. Not wanting to vacation in a battle zone or high alert for terrorists that have no problem kidnapping, killing and torturing US citizens- has nothing to do with not liking anyone.

Israel is at war. Americans should not vacation in a war zone. Period end of story. Do you suggest that people go vacation in Ukraine? or any other war zone? or other dumb places like Iran I f you want to support Israel send donations and speak up for Jews in America.

i'll be back there for 2 days next week on business (not canceled) and none of the holy sites are on lockdown and closed. The tourist areas have been insulated by much of this but I get the trepidation. NYC might be worse than visiting the wailing wall right now. Regardless, people don't want to go then don't. I told OP to look at Turkey as well which I highly recommend

one thing is for sure, the Lagonnissi region in Greece is a GREAT spot to rest your *** for a bit. I spent one of my 3 weeks end of summer/into September there and highly recommend

Rhodes is an amazing place. Crete is a big island and the people are very friendly. If you want a day trip out of Athens/Piraeus there is an island called Aegina that you can take a shuttle to.

that message is fine if that is your opinion of safety. No issues with that- your last line unless you don't like Jews...that was the part that was what I am really calling out

I don’t know why a tourist should consider traveling to a country that is engaged in war, civil unrest and has the active threat of terrorism.

My wife’s family is from Cyprus and we have property there and also visit every few years.

The country has a complicated recent history with the Turkish invasion in the 1970/s. The banks were going to collapse a few years ago and the Russian oligarch money saved them. (My opinion)

So nowadays, if you arrive at the airport, you’ll see every sign translated into English, Greek and Russian. It’s pretty crazy for those of us that know the country before the banking crisis. The Russian presence makes certain beach towns feel like South Beach! Crazy how fast the yachts and beautiful women showed up.

That said, if you decide to go, reach out and I’ll direct you to real non-touristy restaurants/beaches/etc. It’s really a great country filled with amazing people!

My wife's family is from Nicosia. We have been asked to come visit many times but the closest we have ever been is Astoria.

I am Greek and have been to a ton of the islands. Would not recommend Cyprus. Rhodes is interesting with its mix of history. Crete has great ruins and beaches. Of course Santorini is awesome and in May not very crowded. Stay in Oia. Mykonos is a real tourist trap with a lot of drunk Europeans . Have fun

That’s where we have our place - right in middle of city.

You should go! It’s an interesting place and certainly the people/food are worth the trip.

Is it Mykonos where there is that one restaurant that just rips off tourists all the time with crazy appetizers. I think it is DK Oyster if I remember.
