i'm aware. is there any real world cost benefits that NYSDOT has realized? or are they still in assessment mode?

Well, it's not something that anyone has implemented, yet, because the underlying V2I infrastructure doesn't exist. But they were one of the sponsors of the research. They're 100% on board with the approach.

90k for a truck that's hailed as the everyday workman's vehicle sounds insane to me. but that's awesome that you got to see/feel it in the flesh.

I agree to an extent, but they do have a stripped down work model that starts under $40K and will drop to low $30s or even high $20s with incentives.

I might be wrong, but KS' event doesn't sound like it was meant to focus on that at all. Sounds more like it was meant to show/upsell the fancier trims and options.

The focus on 18-speaker B&O sound systems seems misplaced, but full-size pickup buyers are known to spec up.

One's person's Debbie Downer is another's realist. Come back and talk to me in 15 years when the technology is no longer experimental and the storage/charging infrastructure is developed to the point it could service more than a few college kid's experiments. In the meantime we''ll have to listen to soon to be Nobel winner Greta berate us with the economic knowledge of a high school senior and the total lack of awareness that she is being used.

No, not really.

"Realism" such as yours is more the death of vision and progress ...which was very loosely highlighted here. There'd be nothing to come back to talk about in 15 years with your attitude. It's an interesting experimental vehicle now. Period.

Did I read that right? Porsche Taycan outsold the model S and X combined by 100%.

Great news for Porsche in otherwise awful year and for the luxury EV market.

Few S sales in first 2Q due to remodel. I think the X has just been updated. Let's see comparable sales from Q3 forward.

Better hope Porsche doesn’t come out with a cayman version of the Taycan. Being outsold in a market you are supposed to dominate is not a good look. I believe the numbers are through Q3.

The "work truck" XLT version is at about $45-47K before the $7500 rebate, which is much more affordable.

Start adding in all of the fancy things that are in modern higher end pickup trucks/SUVs like enhanced sound systems, navigation, 18 speakers, leather seats, higher range batteries, and it adds up quickly to another $40K.

@Bleem Phuppert @RUevolution36

I was referring to a smaller 4 door version of the Taycan (cheaper) that would compete against the Model 3.

shouldn't be too hard to do. take the VW/Audi platform and go to town.

They won't do it. The platform in question is the MQB platform which underpins such things as the VW Golf / GTI / R and Jetta GLI as well as the Audi A3/S3/RS3 and Q3. Porsche building a stablemate to those cars, albeit electric, would have serious brand impingement issues and *** is really, really fussy about that sort of thing after learning the lesson of the lesson of the Volkswagen Phaeton, which was a stablemate of the Audi A8 and sold miserably because nobody could understand the point of an $80,000.00 Volkswagen.

An electric Porsche MQB would have to be priced well above $50k because the Audi S3 runs about $54k, fully equipped. Audi sales would suffer. *** doesn't allow that.

the e-tron GT and taycan are on the same platform with the same target customer price bracket...there can be enough brand differentiation to make it work

I think they've managed to do that for a couple of reasons. First, I think there was enough desire in leadership to prove out the platform that they designed and marketed the two cars as aggressively as possible in an effort to move units. Second, while there's a price point correlation just north of $100k, the Taycan is available in a much broader range of trims and performance specs - and thereby, price. It starts at just over $80k and can run as high as $185k. The e-Tron GT is a very narrow offering and costs right around $104k, with a very limited range of options.

The other thing to consider is that the MQB is an IC platform. Revising it for electrification would really give you a slightly modified MQB, it would be a completely different platform, altogether.

it would have to be an all new platform for EV replacements for the golf/jetta/a3/a4.

edit: could be based on the id vizzion platform?

I didn't even look at the posted twitter stats. But if what you say is true, then, gasp, the Taycan would be the Toyota Camry of EVs. And that would suck for me since I more or less have been using "the Toyata Camry of EVs" as an insult. 😃

Drat! Hoist by my own petard. LOL

Fremont has capacity for 100K S and X combined. Expect those #s in 2022.
S lines just got going again late Q2.
X still at 0 deliveries this year, but should start production before the end of this year.

Personally, I think Tesla should focus more on the more affordable models. The high end market is very brand loyal and taste specific. 0-60 time isn’t going to translate sales. For Tesla, a 30k model would be a game changer.

I do know why anyone will buy a panamera at this point. You might as well discontinue that model.
The Panamera family station wagon version is pretty awesome. But then there’s the Taycan Cross Turismo, which is pretty sexy.

But yeah, I suspect the Panamera is gonna fade away pretty soon.

Tesla has not announced any plans to expand S and X production beyond Fremont.

They can maintain 100K very high margin units/year for the foreseeable future. Capital is already invested. It would be a very poor business decision to stop production.

Both models are about breaking a spell. The world had been under an illusion that EVs are inferior to ICE vehicles. Both models show that EVs can be better than ICE vehicles. It's important to keep that message alive.

The $25K vehicle announced on Battery Day should be in production by 2023..
.. hopefully. Yes, it will be a game changer.

NHTSA being overzealous in enforcement of the rules about safety recall reporting? Or Tesla thinking rules are for other auto makers and hiding safety defects from consumers? You decide.

Failure to slow for emergency vehicles isn't a "defect" for a level 2 ADAS system. It's a limitation. Every automaker with an ADAS system, or even basic cruise control has this same limitation. Tesla has already rolled out an update to address this anyway. Shocking that a government agency can't keep pace with innovation. I guess NHTSA will now turn their attention to Ford's BlueCruise and GM's SuperCruise.
