we all knew this was coming. the free ride is going to come to an end soon.
I kind of have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, if the goal is to prompt people to adopt EVs, then it seems silly to not give them a tax holiday for a few years. OTOH, it seems like it will hurt lower income folks who cannot afford a new EV at this time.

And on the third hand, roads and tunnels need fixin'.

Having a spouse who works in the industry...your third point is really important. There's a LOT of roads, bridges, and tunnels that need fixing. And having a bunch of heavier EV's on the road isn't going to make the deterioration happen slower.

Other states have been doing this. I think someone mentioned New Jersey hasn’t started yet. Maybe they will just raise the tolls some more on roads that were supposed to do away with them 50 years ago.
No money from the Turnpike, GSP, or AC Expressway go to funding the rest of the road projects in NJ. Those roads need fixing too.

This is true. Infrastructure is in pretty bad shape in this country, especially in dense-population areas where use is so heavy.

Still, it's a little comically ironic that Texas, home of the new Tesla mammajamma factory, or whatever it's called, is going to tax EV owners where other states haven't done so yet. The amount, insignificant as it is, will piss off Texan EV owners a little, but in truth, it's not very much money compared to their EV purchases. So at least the tax hits people who can afford it.

it's also less than their annual fuel costs if they had an ICE vehicle, so, while it may skew the value prop a tiny bit, it shouldn't be a make or break factor.

Probably true.

Except for people who cut off their nose to spite their face over the principle. Some folks really hate taxes. 😃

I pretty much never give taxes much thought. Or money. After all, it's the root of all evil. Best to keep it at arms length.

you pay it one way or another...in gas tax or road use tax...it's something that won't be avoidable in the future.

Actually, I think taxes are going away in the future. Just won't be enough people with jobs to support the current model. But that's a story for another thread.

I’ve seen that too. I suppose I need to start studying the manual.
Mine came something like 2 weeks ahead of schedule. I have lost track. Is yours a hybrid?

Don't want to derail this thread, but I was shocked my Ford dealer charged a $299 window etching fee with no option to refuse, $599 document fee and on top of that, another $500 to process my plates and title. We paid cash and did a trade in. Thought this extra $1400 was greedy. Perhaps the Tesla model of selling is the way to go.

Whoa ! I don’t have those ( although I may or may not keep my current plates). Was this ON TOP of the $1,495 delivery/dealer prep fee. My total is $21,865 on a hybrid XL with drop in bedliner and delivery/dealer prep fee. That amount is pre-tax.

The obvious solution is to change the gas tax to a VMT tax. But some will be exceedingly difficult from a political perspective.

Agree with this in principle. The unique thing about gas tax though... it costs more for ppl who drive gas guzzlers... so it's very progressive in that way. I have one car that avgs 22mpg. My other car avgs 28mpg. I pay more in gas tax to drive 500mi in the first car than the 2nd. A VMT doesn't differentiate if a vehicle is more frugal than another... so... during a transition to EV's, If I think this thru...I think you either overcharge those who are EV drivers to account for the gas guzzlers, or you undercharge everyone.

I get my Tesla the first week of March now. Process has been so smooth so far and the app updates are amazing. Such a different car buying experience

Car dealers are all price gouging these days and there is plenty of inventory on the lots. I had a few dealers act like I was crazy for refusing to pay more than MSRP.

The Chevy Super Bowl commercial reveals one thing - GM is in deep ****. Just click the link, try to reserve the EV Silverado and read the small print. "Actual reservation model ... available Summer of 2024". Yikes - What a cluster F - and what is GM focusing on now - more "sensitivity training".

I never understood why Ford decided to use the Mustang name for an EV. Regardless, seems to be a legit threat.

+1 on the naming. Seems they just wanted to establish familiarity quickly, in a way only a beloved nameplate could, but it feels forced. Much like Chevy bringing back the Blazer as a lame small crossover..

That said, I'll take Mustang Mach E over the horrifically boring names that dominate the EV market, i.e. numbers or just throwing an E or EV onto the end of the existing model name.

Would have been great if they named it CyberCar

Ford will not only have at least an 18 month jump with the Lightning over the Silverado, but it looks basically like an F-150. The Chevy Silverado just doesn’t look great, not awful, just not great. If Ford can really crank out the Lightnings in the next 4 to 18 months, some of those Silverado reservation folks may switch. Will be interesting to see if a significant number of Lightning buyers are first time truck buyers and/or new Ford customers. This is what the Maverick has brought to Ford .

I truly liked the Mach-E....looked at it for awhile but couldn't come to grips with moving forward. Hated the Mustang name in it as it doesn't sound right

They did a super bowl commercial for the EV Hummer last year too. They sold 1 (no joke)in Q4 2021. Why are they bothering electrifying this vehicle? 9,000+ lbs, $100k+, and a whopping 217kWh battery pack!! That's almost 4 sedans worth of batteries.

I better not hear GM belly aching about battery supply if this is how they're choosing to use (waste) them.
Mind boggling.

Very good point. That's in line with the Hummer lineage, which was a major gas guzzler. Maybe the Hummer EV with that much batter power has a significant carbon footprint. 😜

Have the design specs for the Cybertruck been released, and does anyone know the projected size of the Cybertruck battery pack? The F150 Lightning?
