My mother passed in her sleep last night after battling with dementia for years. She left behind a husband of 65 years, 9 children, 25 grandchildren and 1 one great grandchild. Thankfully she had friends and family by her side and always had a wonderful relationship with her family. Although it is a sad it event it is nice knowing that she passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones who were there each of her last days.
So the reason I'm posting this message is not because I'm seeking condolences but rather to make an observation. After spending every day in Hospice for the last week I can't help but think how terrible it would have been if she had been alone when she passed. There were a few hospice patients there who didn't seem to have any visitors. Many times parents and children have terrible relationships and many times it is a result of not being very good parents. That said, don't lose the opportunity to say goodbye to them and provide some degree of comfort even if your relationship with them was not great. You won't have a chance after they're gone.
