This will be my 19th year without my dad. It really never gets any easier. Not only was he my dad, he was also my best friend. He was also my hunting buddy-I couldn’t even go to the woods for over 3 years after he passed, but I finally was able to put that behind me. My family tells me that they have something “special” planned for this Fathers Day. I had a near-death experience earlier this year-the doctors told my family I had less than a 10% chance of survival (I had sepsis). I spent almost 2 weeks in ICU (and 8 days on a vent) in Hattiesburg. The sepsis was the result of something called “necrotizing fascitis”, more commonly known as “flesh-eating bacteria”. The doctors tell us it is a “miracle” that I survived. There’s nothing like almost dying to make our loved ones appreciate us just a little more than they did before.

My dad has been gone 8 years now, and my momma gone 12........a friend at church told me, no matter your age, you are an orphan when your parents leave the earthly world.....and it's true.....it makes these type holidays tough b/c you want your people there and all you have is their memory........

I would always ask my dad what I could get him that he really wanted but wouldn't do for himself, and like clockwork, he always answered, ".....I just want to be surrounded by my happy family." I never fully understood that reply until he was in his last days.....

......So my perfect father's day gift is church with my son, we'll go have a good lunch, and then cook out with friends that have become family to us for dinner........time spent with my "family".....and, as it turns out, everybody is happy!

Happy father's day to all you fellas
