Really just don't have many bites at the Refuge. Where are some other spots. Bass, catfish, hell, even brim.... just somewhere to throw a line and pound a few beers, perhaps even turn my swag on like Ozarka.

To make it sports related, Cohen won't let me fish at his place anymore... lawsuit and all.

I haven't been able to do any fishing around the Golden Triangle due to not having boat up here, but I've heard decent things about Columbus Lake/Tibbee Creek. You would need a boat, though. If you just want to catch catfish, I would think you could catch some on the West Bank of the Stennis Lock and Dam. (I think it is the West Bank. It is the side opposite the marina on Columbus Lake.) There is a little spillway there where you could probably catch some stripes if the conditions were right, and you can fish below the lock.

I've never heard of anyone doing that well Oktibbeha County Lake, and I'm not sure if it has been closed to the public or not.

Bluff Lake is known for being difficult to fish, and it doesn't help that they manage the lake for waterfowl instead of fishing. I would think you could catch of ton of bream there, but I've never fished it. Loakfoma (spelling?) was supposedly great when it used to be open, but it has yet to open since they restocked it.

Black Praire WMA off of Hwy 45 has a lake, but I couldn't tell you anything about it.

I don't know where the nearest boat ramp to Starkville is, but judging from the number of boats I saw at the ramp in Macon, people must catch a fair amount of fish in the Noxubee River. It looks like a fun place to fish.

If you have a canoe or kayak, you could probably catch a mixed bag of fish at any of the large creeks around the area. A fisheries biologist I used to help out some said when he was working in the Golden Triangle they would always shock a bunch of fish in Line Creek.

Without having a boat or access to a private lake, it will be hard to catch fish.

Anyone ever fished the big lake at the MSU golf course? Some golf course lakes/ponds have a bunch of fish in them, although I sure as hell wouldn't eat any of 'em.

I have been working there for the better part of three years and have never once tossed my line out there. However, some locals fish that large pond daily and always leave with a string in tow. I imagine that they catch them for dinner, too. We have tried to tell them that we use that lake for our irrigation and that tons of fertilizer chemicals runoff into that lake from the course. Still hasn't stopped them.

I've had zero luck at Bluff lake the few times I fished it. Of course, I have no boat so I am fishing from the banks and can't really get to any good spots.

I'm a catch and release guy anyway. Not trying much for prize fishing or dinner. Really, I just want an excuse to wear my Columbia shirt and polish off a few cases and a handle of Beam that my roommates left when they went home for the summer. Told them I wouldn't, but it's been staring at me too long. Considering I work at the course, the boss man wouldn't be too fond of me throwing em back out there after work one day.

Oktibbeha County Lake has been closed to the public. Never thought about Tibbee, so I'll probably try that out some day this week.

If you fish Columbus lake, DO NOT cut out like you know the lake! That thing is full of stumps and flats just waiting for you to run aground and take out a lower unit! Idle around until you get the lay of the land! Tibbee creek and the mouth of it is great for catfish and bass but again, stump heavy. Have most luck in the gravel pits when bass fishing.

Personally, if I were bass/bream fishing I would go up to Aberdeen to lake Monroe. Also, I believe Aberdeen Lake is known for having good catfish.

Other than that, I would try the sloughs off of the Tenn-Tom

Since you don't have a boat, there are people that fish from the banks on Aberdeen Lake that I have seen catching fish pretty regularly...other than that, your best bet might be state lakes where they have piers

I don't fish but work with some who do. These are some spots they occasionally visit without a boat.

Lake Lowndes State Park out in New Hope
Luxapalila Creek in Columbus (some go to the Lux Park south of Columbus and also fish in the creek just east of the Lowndes County Sheriffs Dept)

East bank of Columbus Lock and Dam .. they fish down below the dam where a small creek enters the Tenn Tom Waterway (from the bank)
Of course there is the west bank of Columbus Lock and Dam and also some go to the L&D near Aberdeen (catfish mostly)
For bank fishing, look into Land O Lakes Brooksville. It has been years and years since I have been there. But this time of year, back in the day, you could catch a mess of bream fishing worms on the bottom. I would catch a few bass late in the evening too on plastic worms.

When I was a kid we lived in Columbus. I'd wade the upper (I think northern, might be western) end of LL with a spinner bait. Lots of lay-downs, and I caught lots of fish when other guys said nothing to be caught in LL. The end is mostly shallow, but there are a few deep channels that you have to watch for.

That was a long time ago so I have no idea how it is now, but it might be good for an afternoon's entertainment.

I am a member of two fishing clubs and one of them is very inexpensive and has good fishing. There are only 12 members(mostly old timers that don't fish very often anymore, 15 is the most members that he is willing to take). It consists of 3 lakes(smaller lakes, nice scenery andsolid fishing too). You can store your jonboat there for convenience(gated entrance to the main lake and that is theonly way to get in and out of the place unless you are traveling via a 4 wheeler) if neededand two of the lakes have boat landings. The membership fee is only $80 a year. You pretty much need to know the guy to get in andhe does not advertise the small club, it is just for some extraside money and it gives him and his Dad's friends a private place to fish. That being said, I can get you in with no problems as long a you don't have tear drop tattoosor a3 foot mohawk, etc. The other placehas a one time joiningfee of $2500 and then an annual fee of 100 bucks. Also, you can pay a one time fee of$800 if you want to have a privateboat slip toowhich doesinclude power outletsforrunning battery chargers or anything else that you may need. There is a waiting list for the club right now so it could take a while to get in. One of thebestattributes aboutthis place is that you can alwayssell your membership back to the club or to an individual if you decidethatit is not worth it to you.The landconsists of over 10 lakes(several are Oxbow), 5 of which have boat ramps and the fishing is simply top notch. Away from those options, I say take a small jonboat with a foot controlled trolling motor down tibee creek and you can tear up crappie, bass, and catfish depending on the time of the year. Just watch for snakes, I know a few folks that have had them drop from an overhanging branch into their boat, 17 that. If you like to catfish(I ammainly acatch and release bass fisherman, but I have been known to grab a 12 pack and go jugging with a few buddies on occassion), the Lux is a decent place to go(there are miles and miles of levees alongencasing the large creekmaking bank fishing easily accessible with tons of different spots to choose from). You don't even need a 4wd to navigate this area as long as it has not rained heavily recently. Good luck and hit up my inbox if any of the above interests you. I know of a few more public fishing holes off of the beaten path also, just let me know. In case you can't tell, I am an avid fisherman.

More of a cookie jar type deal than bass club, but so many of them have so much drama that other than lack of standings and a classic I think I'd prefer these, but I know they dont work with everyones schedules. I just bought a bigger bass boat last week allowing me more access to those types of water. I think they have a Bay springs one is every Tuesday night, from 6-10, perhaps 6-9. Not sure where they launch nor the entryfee but if interested will pass that along once I get it. Fished a friday night tourney at Pickwick this past friday for the first time, launched from Goat Island and was 6-12. Entry is $20 a boat with exception of last weekend of the month and then its 40. Maybe a little farther than you wanted to go but the 20 entry fee may make up for it. They pay 3 places places plus lunker, and think they pay 4 on the 40 tourneys. Was between 25-30 boats at this one. First night tourney Id fished in years but I enjoyed it. 18 lbs won it and also had the lunker at 4 something. We had a limit early but could never get a kicker that would have put us in the money. Didnt have a great post-dark plan as this was our first one but we were sitting on like 9 lbs at 11:20, about 10 min ride from ramp. Then I hung a good one on a red eye-shad, got him netted, a freaking 6+lb drum. Would have at least taken lunker, and probably moved us into 2nd. Not only that, buddy of mine was driving the boat, we cranked up to move and was idling for about 5 mins when we saw several fish start to break the surface near the boat, all the sudden about a 12" asian carp jumps up and lands in his lap. For those that arent familiar with asian carps, that isnt good news. Have about taken over parts of the MS river along with parts of the great lakes. But first Id heard of on Pickwick. Those night tournys may not fit your schedule, but if you can id encourage you to try a couple, especially with the heat right now. Plus you dont have the drama of some of the bass clubs, and having multiple partners isnt an issue(always a plus).

have u fished any of the smaller ponds and lakes on refuge? several years ago we used to fish out there and always caught fish...nothing huge but always fun. as far as the waterway goes u gotta put in some boat time. and if u plan on fishin weekends better get WAY off the beaten path or go early cuz the boat traffic is non stop. but fish can definitely be caught. as for the tibbee its all about the time of year. this not being the best time. i have put in hours and hours on the water around here and occasionally have some really good days. if u want to catch big fish the farther north...bay springs, pickwick...the better

they drained lokafoma years ago and restocked it. Not sure if it's ready yet. One of the smaller ones you are referring to is Ross Branch. It was drained last year. They put more cover in and filled it but I'm not sure what they stocked it with or if they even did. It was a great bass hole until they screwed it up. The other small lake at the refuge is hard to get to. No boat landing at the lake but you can drag a boat in if you want. You're getting too much pressure on Bluff now.

Now, the county lake is locked. MDWFP is no longer the leasing the section. Outdoor recreation in our area is going downhill. Leaders need to step up.
