Back in the day (define as 1985-1990ish), what was the restaurant housed in the hotel by the old log cabin Burger King. When you turned in to go to the movie theatre, Burger King (formerly a bank) was on your right, and the hotel and restaurant were on the left. In my mind that was the District Cafe, owned by the late Jim Mosier. Is that right?

I know that Harvey's was originally over there before they moved to the strip beside the Lodge.

Harvey's was in that hotel in the early to mid 80's for sure. I don't recall when it moved.

I bought my wife many a Sunbelt Salad there.

Originally a Ramada as I recall.

As you entered, the bar was to the right, and the restaurant part was to the left. I had many a mug of draft beer with shaved ice there. This was fall of '84.

there had been a movie theater rat there also.

The Ramada had a Ho problem.

Toby Nash's! Big Jim owned it. 7 foot tall big Jim. Played hoops with him...

many a day at the University Commons courts. That big SOB couldn't get an inch off the ground but at nearly 7 foot and thick, he didn't need to to clog up the lane.

Harvey's

In the 80's it was Harvey's (with $1Harvey wall bangers don't know what was in them but after several you would be sure to puke Kelly green before you felt better the next morning) The District Cafe was in the district on Nash street I think in a brick bldg with a gravel parking lot on the west side of street

There was also a pizza hut next to the movie theatre and yeah the ramada was a $20 ***** house

It was two places in one - the District Cafe was the finer dining option and Toby Nash's was the sports bar option. I was a bartender there from probably '93ish until '95ish. The owner Jim Mosher (sp) was 7-feet tall and had played basketball at UMass. The food was awesome and it was one of the 1st places to have multiple good draft beers when I was there.

Yep, he was a big dude. His back was 17ed up though, he would lay on the floor in the private dining room between the District Cafe and Toby's every night due to back pain. I always liked Jim; and his wife Kathy was super nice... As someone else mentioned, the fried cheese was awesome and the London Broil was also great. There was also the Cafe Burger that you could order with tons of toppings.

Good memories. I was popular as hell (with my cheap, drunkard friends) when I worked there...

The log cabin was still a bank in 86. And I remember when the original Grill left the district. I do remember the restaurant being Harvey's my sophomore year 87-88. But I'm no help as to what it was before.
However, I remember having a nice steakhouse on campus under the cafeteria behind the bakery in 86. You coins use your "money-mate" card. I think it only was there for a year. (Sorry for the hijack).

That would be Toby Nash's. A great establishment. I liked it a lot. Jim Mosier did own it.

My wife worked there back when we were in school but have not seen them in years.

Yes. Choices was in the spot that became Toby Nash's later on. I don't know when Choices started there but I know it was there in '88 and stayed there until it moved to Rick's present location.

I worked there in '96 and it was the District Cafe then...and yes big Jim was the owner. It closed down in '97 and he and kathy opened something up in the Cotton District some time in the 2000's.

Sad. I did not realize that. Jim could be one of the nicest guys in the world but he did have a serious temper if you crossed him. He was definitely not shy about asking shitfaced college kids to get out if they got too rowdy.

I grew up in Starkville and remember that spot being Harvey's, Choices, and Toby Nash's before I left town.

But $20 pre-Craigslist hookers at the Ramada? I never heard about that. When was that going on?

In high school, a bunch of us got rooms there on prom night a couple of times.

I lived in the CD for 4 years. The Cotton District Grill was my favorite bars. Just the right size to go have a few + good food as well.
Spent too many afternoons there during "Bud-Thirty".

Damn I didn'tknow Jim that well but I could've written a better Obit than that.

He deserved better recognition than that little piece. I never knew his last name, so I'm guessing that is him. Jim was as nice as they come but he would get fired up at the drunk obnoxious student. He'd also get a little feisty on the basketball court. I've heard he was a little hard to work for at Toby Nash's as well. I was there from 88-93 in school and slummed around thru 94, so I spent at least one night a week there for a long time. Had some good times talking to Jim in there as well. Rest in Peace Big Jim.
