Long story short, I own a restaurant in the Carribean. I do a lot of Cajun dishes but I just use lobster, shrimp, or conch in place of crawfish. I've been wanting to offer crawfish dishes for a while now but obviously not available here. I've been looking at bringing in some of the 1 lb bags of tails but holy crap they are pricey. I have the delivery mechanisms all in place if I can have them delivered frozen to Miami.

I can serve fresh Cajun lobster sauce or Cajun shrimp sauce for less than I'm seeing the price of crawfish online.

Im hoping it's just what I'm seeing online. Anyone have any info on what a 1 lb bag of tails costs when ordering from Sysco or some other restaurant distributor?

It's more of a unique marketing thing (and I'd love to have some) so I'm not trying too hard to get this done. I'm more curious if it's even a possibility. I'd probably only do it a few times a year just because it's a headache.

for reference I can get
4-6 oz lobster tails (shell on) - $10 lb (cheaper if I buy them from the locals who snatch them off the reef)
Shrimp - $7 lb

One way ticket and a cooler that looks like a kidney transport and I’m heading your direction loaded down.

One of my options is having friends stick 20 lbs in a little cooler, it's actually no issue to fly in with meat if it's sealed up. I'll definitely bring some back on my next trip but I havnt been back in 3 years.

I just can't get over the prices I'm seeing. $12-20 lb is insane. No way I convince all these expat Yankees and Canadians to pay that for a gimmick. I got one coonass LA family down here that would probably jump on it. They are LSU fans but Souther Miss baseball fans. I can't figure that **** out but they're rich and show up weekly so I'm not complaining.

well the frozen ones from china in the grocery store are $20/lb year round.....personally, I boil around 300-500lbs a year for customers and each time peel and vacuum seal 1-2lbs to keep year round....it is a pain in the *** to do it, although worth it with the crawfish bread I make with them later.....sometimes i debate on whether to just buy the chinese version .....its that big of a headache

For the record, I bought frozen Louisiana crawfish tails a few weeks ago at Rouses for $8.99 lb

The real question is how does one end up owning a restaurant in the Caribbean?

Where do you live? Rouses routinely had Louisiana crawfish tails on does for $12-14 per pound. The Chinese ones are terrible and $20 is insane

You don't want the Chinese ones if you want happy customers, they taste like crap right out of the bag. I flew into the Bahamas twice last year on private flights to fish. Everybody got out of the plane walked inside the Home Depot like little shed where the overweight "customs officer" was, flashed him our passports got them stamped and walked out. A couple teenagers meanwhile unloaded our coolers, gear, luggage, etc from the plane and drive off with them totally uninspected in a 1970s golf cart to our rented house. Now maybe the boats/captains pay a premium for that "service" but maybe you should inquire.... Just a suggestion......

I get the marketing thing, but is anybody going to get frozen crawfish tails in close conjunction with having shrimp or lobster and not realize crawfish tails are the worst option?

I was told the price is so high due to lack of labor. The louisiana farms lost most of their immagrant help. Maybe so. But their crawfish prices are too high for me.
