OT: Giant Roadside Crosses

People like to see what their donations go for. They want to see something concrete and permanent. It’s human nature. When I was writing checks to the Bulldog Club and the university I took pride in seeing the new Dude, the new practice field, the new weight room, or the new whatever. Since NIL I no longer write those checks because there is zero transparency and I refuse to bribe 18 year old kids to play for my school. But that’s just me.

lol. What makes it worse is we have a Camping World west of Navarre that has a really giant flag. Not sure how it stacks up in size compared to the defunct Giant Milton Flag Project though but it’s pretty 17’n big.

They are tacky as 17, but everyone needs a hobby and if your hobby is allocating money for a giant cross, then there are worse hobbies to participate in.

It isn't how I would spend a quarter million dollars and not what I think is the most effective way to serve Christ, but it isn't my money and the person(s) spending money gets to spend it how thy want.


They don't bother me to see and I don't get excited to see them. They are just there and it's all pretty neutral.



For those who vote Republican/Conservative and have justified the crosses with 'it's their money' or 'they aren't bothering anyone', I do hope that viewpoint is consistently applied to hobbies and lifestyles that others enjoy.

I may make some folks upset with this one, but what is the deal with all these giant crosses around North Mississippi. There is one in Boonville, Iuka, Corinth, and Saltillo. Also, Aberdeen and Pontotoc are about to get one. Am I crazy thinking that money ($250,000) would be better spent somewhere else? I get having one cross in the State, but this is getting a little crazy. I just wish I would have started a cross-making business because someone is making bank. We already have a church on every corner in the State, now we have a cross in every town. BTW, I am very involved in my church and love the Lord, but I think we could do more for Christ with that money than a roadside cross.

First one I ever saw was north of Knoxville on 75 right at the TN/KY line. Must have been 15 to 20 years ago. Thought at the time, well that's "interesting".

I imagine they probably already did everything they could to address the needs of the least of these: the poor, widows, orphans, and foreigners in their communities.

That Giant Aluminum Cross money was probably just burning a hole in the church savings account.

May as well pay your local construction company to fabricate an erection so every driver along our highways is mindful of God's love for the world and Christ's ultimate sacrifice for our salvation. (so what if the church and the pastor get a little kick back?)

I am very much libertarian, and think both sides are awful, but I told my wife I want to pay for a giant rainbow or Mosque across the street to see what people would do.

I think these are primarily paid for through individual private donations. I know the one in Starkville is on private land donated to the organization. I know our church helped promote it and trying to raise money, but I don't think they actually contributed to the fund, but I'm not sure. I know the original location was going to be inside the city limits, but the city wouldn't issue a permit. I don't recall the exact city statute they said it would violate, but something to do with height restrictions.

Don't think it didn't cross my mind. It just doesn't look high enough and doesn't have internet run to it, so even if we got permission somebody would have to pay for an internet feed to the cross.

Folks would rather donate their money to erect a meaningless symbol so they can pat themselves on the back and say "what a good Christian I am!" rather than actually going out and helping those that need help. The price of one of those monstrosities could fund a lot of good programs that would actually help people. A lot of local food banks operate on $50K a year or less.

We are more interested in meaningless symbolism than doing that which the Bible suggest.

No it's not. It's a reminder. One I often need when I'm driving down the road and in my head about bills, taxes, threads like this and boom, there it is. None of that other stuff matters.
