In a two man best ball format, is it bad etiquette for a player lying six on a green to purposely putt past his partner lying three to give him a read?

I'm thinking your partner doesn't need ... nor want ... a read off your putt.

I am lying three with a putt for birdie(6 feet away), meanwhile my partner put a ball in the drink and is lying six on the other side of the hole. Is it okay for him to putt (aggressively) to put himself behind me so I can get a read?

putt and then mark his ball, ( if he missed the putt) and you would have an open read? Why would it matter if it went past your ball or not?

if partner A lying 3 with a 12 foot putt, partner B is essentially out of it by score. Can he putt to put his ball behind partner A then putt along Partner A's line to give him a good read...who cares whether partner B's score is now 23 in a best ball format?

It is technically legal, but etiquette shouldn't even be entertained as a question. I'd say it depends on whether or not you can physically defend yourself against those playing with you as to whether you should try it. May as well just putt 3 or 4 times to get yourself in perfect alignment 1 inch behind your partner's mark.

It is extremely poor etiquette, and a good way to get your *** kicked if your playing in some type of backwoods dirt road tour 4ball. I've seen people damn near come to blows several times by doing it.

Here's a tip: if you want to win, just make more birdies

the other team would immeadiately "give" you that putt which you are required to accept. they would never let you give your partner a read, but if they are total idiots then by all means putt it.

People who cheat like this at golf often end up in prison for things like mail fraud, embezzlement, or on the program American Greed on CNBC.

People who consider strategy a form of cheating usually don't win at anything.<div>
</div><div>The fact that he's asking proves he's not a cheater. He wants to know if it is allowed, because it would help him win. If the answer is "no", he won't do it. That's why he is asking--so that he doesn'tcheat!</div>

On a message board. It is not cheating it is however bad etiquette, that's why I asked. I don't make opponents putt 18" putts in match play, but I used to see Ryder Cup guys do it all the time. I play with so many players that ground their clubs in the sand, mark balls horribly, don't obey hazard rules, so don't give me this cheater ****. I was just seeing what is considered good or bad form on a course I've never played. That being said anybody play Shalimar Pointe and got some info, I know it's a long shot.

it is an old course and about average length. I played in May and had trouble finding any grass in the fairways because it was dead and hard as a brick. It looked as if it was a really nice course 20 years ago but it lacksmaintenance, mainly watering. However, the green fee was very cheap for Florida, but you get what you pay for. We got a free round that was included with the condo price. We usually play Tiger Pointe and there is a hidden gem in North Pensacola not to far off the interstate called Marcus Pointe and the green fee is around $40.

Plus, a good golfer can get a read on a line from putts coming from the opposite direction. If the teammate runs the ball past the hole, just watch how it breaks then. That's good info without having to be an ***.

I live five minutes from it, and to me Hidden Creek in Navarre is so much more value for the dollar. The tournament we are playing is for members and trail pass holders and is part of a series with TP, Shalimar Pointe, Hidden Creek and Scenic Hilla which are all owned by the same company. If you ever want to play a track for cheap, you can always play TP west course for $20. It's nine holes that got reopened last year so it still has some growing pains but, for $20 all you can it's a good way to kill an afternoon and a case of beer. I appreciate the info, I looked at the holes on Golfshot and it looks pretty straight forward. I just heard the greens are slick.

He asked about whether or not it is bad ETIQUETTE, not if it was legal..... And this has flown straight past "bad etiquette" and into the realm of whispers and awkward glances saying, "Umm...is he retarded or something? "

Also, I'm with Andy on this one.... I still can't believe that his question was honestly asked. This guy is either a total newcomer to golf (I guess that explains the lying-6 on a par three and still away), or he has a serious lack of normal social behavior.

I imagine that he's probably the kind of guy that, in an informal friendly pick-up basketball game, will launch the ball squarely into a complete strangers nose from 3 feet away. Then as his defender crumbles to the ground he yells, "HA! heads up!", as he dribbles like a toddler towards the goal, proceeding to nearly face-plant as he attempts a 'jumpstop', and then pushes the ball with both hands into the under-side up the rim....
