I played a bit in high school when my friends played every weekend but haven't played in years. I'm LH and 6'4" and I remember my clubs being too short and uncomfortable. Can anyone reccomend some somewhat affordable clubs? What brands do you prefer and why?

It's not expensive to have any clubs extended...I'm 6'5" think it cost $55 to have all my irons extended 1"

Thanks bud, that's good to know. I should say I got rid of all my clubs years ago, too. But I didn't know that.

Last time I bought clubs I went to Dick's Sporting Goods and told myself I'd buy the set I hit the best. They have a club hitting area with a monitor set up showing you distance hit and accuracy. Look at all the sets of irons and pick out 5-6 you like best and they'll let you hit golf balls with each one and then simply pick the one you like the best. I bought Ping i20. You can also get a nice set of used clubs for around $200 at golf club stores.

All the major OEM's make quality stuff these days. Well, except Cobra. Worst build quality of any OEM I've ever worked on. If you're trying to stay on the cheap hit the used section or ebay and have them extended. Any builder can get you in the proper length and lie. Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, Adams, etc all make irons that launch high and you can hit it all over the face and the ball still goes.

If you can find a ping rep they will fit you to clubs and order them customized to you for no extra cost. Thats the way to go. Ping has the best stuff out right now. Especially Irons.

They have so many different brands now it's unreal... But I would take the advice of others and try out a few brands of irons and see what feels the best. You ca do the same with your woods. I still hit inexpensive irons I've had for 5 years because I like how they feel...

Dave Cowger, golf pro, in Ridgeland is a Ping master fitter. He does everything indoors and you can order club by club so you can pick which clubs you want. Does all the measuring, etc. Great guy and custom fitting makes a difference.

If you don't want spend a bundle check out Callaway PreOwned. Lots of good sticks there. Many are built for tall guys.

Will do. What does everyone think about cleveland irons?
Any places that carry used clubs in the north ms area? Even Memphis?

global golf is a good site to check for nice used stuff. Ebay is not bad either. Most clubs on there have enough photos for you to see the sole and face of the clubs in detail. I went to GolfTec in East Memphis and bought 2 Vokey wedges last year for $50 a piece that looked new. They have a place to hit different clubs, take lessons and a ton of used clubs there too.

I remember having a king cobra driver and loving it. Just had some cheap irons that were way too short.

Not the most popular but Cleveland makes good sticks. In Memphis, Edwin Watts sometimes has a decent assortment. Golfsmith does too but damn proud of their used stuff. They will haggle though. Mulligans on Park Ave near Mendenhall is a used club shop that has a decent selection.

Try Callaway PreOwned

You can get almost any Callaway iron set in any length/lie you want. They will come re-furbed with new grips. They also take other mfg's on trade-in so they may have another maker's set on hand.

Nice people last time I dealt with them.

extensions work great but you better try 1" out before switching 'em all....

mine are tom wishon 555M blades with spine-aligned, flat-line frequency-matched (weenie flex) pro-force shafts and leather wrap grips...will NEVER change tho i admit to being tempted one time to MOI-match the shafts....and a tech-line scuff rail putter with a 2" flat grip aligned flat-side with putter face (works best for left-hand-low putter grips)

I would pick a set of heads you like. then buy a seperate set of uncut shafts like the below link. KBS is about the best now, though I prefer project x. have someone cut the shafts down 1 or 2" longer than standard/adjust the lie angle for you. That way you get a consistent kickpoint for all of your shafts. I'm not a fan of extensions, but others may feel like they're fine. I think it changes the swing weight/kickpoint of the club. obviously, that's my opinion and it may not matter to you for enjoyablility. You can piece together wedges, putter, woods, and driver here and there.

I think everyone has preferences on brands. I'm a big believer in forged clubs because of the feedback/alignment, and teaching from learning. I think mizuno makes the best forged clubs in forgiving models/cavity backs. I'm a big fan of older pings (ISI, eye 2, eye 3) too if you go offset. Callaway's are usually really forgiving and have alot of distance. I don't know much about the new taylormade irons. If I were a learner I would pick mizuno mp-57's, 58's or something of the sort in the forgiving forged area. I have never had an iron that felt better than a mizuno coming off the sweet spot, but that is me. I have had almost everything. I have old school mizuno mp-32's, but I play a lot.

Go try some at a store with a lot of demo's. Get something you enjoy.

Here's a link to some uncut shafts on ebay. KBS are the hot thing now. I have a set, and i love them for non-rifled shafts. It's a lot of trouble, but I think it will pay off long term.

Hope this blathering helps. best of luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
What can you tell me about King Cobra OS Is? Found a used set that's been extended for a good price.
