As one who read the books

I knew it was coming, was looking forward to the episode, and felt a nonsensical sense of dread the entire time watching it - and the scene was actually more gruesome than in the book, where his wife wasn't even present.

That was the best television I have ever seen. It really isn't even close.

Glad that finally happened

I couldn't stand Rob Stark or his mom, and his bride was not hot. I also think Jon should have taken the redhead with him.

Good episode, but that doesn't change the fact the first 10 episodes or whatever were really weak. This is the second straight season where only the last 2 episodes are good. I hope getting rid of some of these characters focuses the plots a little better.

Nope, about to be lots more characters and lots more subplots. Probably not this season though. But we haven't even met anyone from Dorne yet.

Things to expect:

Danny's story gets boring, Tyrion's and Arya's get weird. You'll probably hate Dorne.

I think Jon Snow has the best story along with Bran. Arya was really good then went off the chain in the book. New book out next Month, is that correct. Hope the Jon Snow story changes.

Winds of Winter in 2014....maybe. Just speculation at this point.

Based on Martin's history, 2015 or even later seems more likely.

**SPOILER**

I just hope he doesn't end up being "Undead" Jon like the ranger that's helping Bran or the ones brought back by the Red Priest. Kinda convenient that there just so happens to be a red priestess nearby though.

Somebody want to explain what happened with Jon Snow?..

One minute he's fighting for his life, before his conveniently-there, telepathic brother saves him with a huge wolf.. The next, an eagle arbitrarily drops from the sky and begins plucking at his face so he gets up and leaves the fire bush girl without so much as a glance back.

What gives? Because that was odd and completely out of character.

The eagle was being "warged" by the bad telepathic dude that Jon drove his sword through. He never really wanted to be a wildling, so he fled. Playing by the rules set forth by Martin, everything was very much in character.

Oh.. I never understood..

..that there was more than one telepathic person on the show. I don't think I'm paying close enough attention to keep all the storylines straight.

From what I can tell, warging isn't unique. But warging a humanoid is.

Are the books worth reading if you like the show? And is the series complete? Or has the author at least indicated that he has a plan for completing the books?

Apparently if you are a warg and you die, you can "pass your spirit" on to other animals and live for a very long time. Think "Fallen/Time is on My Side". So, just because the wildling was killed by Jon, his spirit lived on because he warged into that eagle.

Technically, all of the Stark children have very strong bonds with their respective wolves and can warg into them. Sansa can't though, because her wolf is dead. Arya still wargs into Nymeria when she sleeps, they just haven't covered that yet or deem it important enough to put on the show. Same with Jon wargs into Ghost when he sleeps sometimes and so does Rickon into Shaggydog. The important one is Bran because he is more gifted than his siblings and can control other animals as well apparently weak-minded humans/crossbreeds such as Hodor.

Outside of the Stark children, the other wargs in the show are the wildling guy who was killed last night, and the older blond kid (Jojen Reed) in Bran's group.
