Besides all the tourist stuff i would love to hear if anyone has any great suggestions for cool bars and places to eat off the beaten path? We are staying at a friends in the Lower East Side.
I like Tao. It's a trendy Asian restaurant downtown. Good sushi and what not. Kind of for a younger person, probably not somewhere you'd want to have small kids. Google it.
Avoid Brooklyn. There's nothing to see out on Long Island either.
Sushi Yasuda for sushi, Pearl's Oyster Bar for lunch (lobster roll w/ shoestring fries and clam chowder), Spice Market for variety, Pompano is a great for inspired Mexican cuisine, The Spotted Pig, and if you want to blow some money and get rewarded for it, I'd put Le Bernadin up against any other restaurant in the country. Also a great little Italian nook in mid-town called The Olive Garden**
They have some kind of whiskey cream, rice wine, coffee crunch, hot and cold shot glass of heavenly sweet **** worth killing your own mother over. If I ever go back, I will order a dozen and call it a meal.
You're already in a good spot. Lower East Side (LES) and the East Village are going to be great places to eat and have drinks. You can walk anywhere and find a bunch of killer places. Stay away from Times Square.

</div><div>Some favorites:</div><div>Congee Village - authentic Chinese</div><div>Minca - authentic Japanese ramen</div><div>Roni-Sue chocolates - they have chocolate covered bacon - in the Essex St Market</div><div>Shake Shack - burgers</div><div>Donut Plant - get the creme brulee donut</div><div>John's Pizzeria in the West Village</div><div>
</div><div>There are some good suggestions above as well. I don't know why people are hatin' on Brooklyn, because you'll find plenty of great places in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens and Williamsburg. The crowd in Williamsburg may be a little light in the pants, but there are great places to eat, hang out and people watch.</div>
Second the Shake Shack, the place has really good burgers and is worth the line.
Also check out J.G. Melon - awesome burgers and an incredible play on the bloody mary called the Bloody Bull. It's like drinking a steak and kills a hangover.
This is from my 30 year old daughter who has lived in LES last 5 years. She says these are not necessarily "off the beaten path" but since entire LES looks like a dump it is hard to tell where paths are. Her favorites:
light dinner or appetizers--Salt Bar
AMAZING beer selection and great lunch dinner or late night food--Spitzers
For the adventurous eater, no reservations, amazing food--Momofuku
fancy trendy mexican with amazing cocktails--Rayuela
her favoriter martini and french food for great people watching at affordale prices--Schillers
