The proper term is vacation with pay.

Paid vacation means that someone pays all the expeensives for your vacation.

Engineers make about half or less of what they do here because they have to hire more to cover all the vacations. Is the trade off worth it? I don’t know.
At some point it’s not. And at some point it is. if you’re struggling to make ends meet meet & living paycheck to paycheck, you want to work more and be paid more. But at some point the time off is more important than the money .

It's a tradeoff. We're richer. None of my friends in Europe have as a big a house as I have, as many cars and refrigerators and TVs for instance. But they live longer and enjoy a great lifestyle. Public transportation is great compared to what we have and they police it much better than we do. Few concerns about medical debt. Fewer material items. Their cities are generally safe.

Take it from somebody who has to talk to people in France on occasion for work… actually catching one of those bastards in the office is like wrangling a unicorn. I’m not kidding when I say they have more days off than they actually work.

It's a tradeoff and I'd say on average americans and europeans are bad at the tradeoff, but on different ends of the spectrum. In the short term, Europeans look closer to ideal. But when you look at what they've done to growth, it's a lot less clear.

Meanwhile in the long run were all dead.

Europe also has good public services especially transportation in cities and they protect citizens and tourists in the nice areas. We have some progressive dominated cities run by politicians who seem to want to make life easier for criminals, especially violent criminals, who bother and terrorize law abiding citizens. For instance, I'm not really interested in riding busses in major cities. Not a problem in Europe
