It's all about the processor. Go with the iPad, especially since you are getting an iPhone. This way you can use the iCloud system and sync both devices across your home network.

If anyone tells you that

X is better than the iPad
or Y is better than the iPhone
or Z is better than the iPod

and you believe them, it is your fault.

I have a kindle fire

though not the hd, and 2 I phone's. I like the kindle for reading/books better, and it is way more cost effective. My mom has the loaded out ipad with the big processor and 160 gig memory. I have to default to the other folks here in sync'ing all your devices. I just run my kindle independent. The app store is not as good with it and surfing I probably like better on ipad though kindle is not bad. I like to use it for netflicks, reading, playing a few games, surfing, and you tube. It works good for videos and the video quality is very good....even better with the Hd version. Kindle has the cloud type technology for storing your purchases, sync'ing, and backup. Amazon supports the kindle very well. I have had one stolen and they can blacklist it with a phone call....(forced redistribution) to save passwords and financial expenses.

I am happy with the kindle and it was only about 200 compared to 700 or so for ipad. Smaller screen, but maybe a bit more travel friendly.

Hope this helps.

Instead of getting both a Kindle Fire and an iPhone 5, consider a

Samsung Galaxy Note. 5.3" HD screen, but as thin and light as many other smart phones. I use it for internet and Kindle ebooks as well as a phone. I've carried the Note in jeans pockets and it's not too big at all.

If you can wait, the Galaxy Note II will be coming out October 24th. It has a 5.5" screen and will be the only phone with LTE 4G and a quad-core processor, and it will have the latest Android OS (Jelly Bean).

Here's a pic comparing the size of the iphone 5 and Galaxy Note II:

Perhaps they have improved things, but I have one of the earlier Kindle fires and it is TERRIBLE for browsing the web. It’s great for e-books and has a few other nice features, but if you are going to want to use a tablet for a significant amount of web browsing, I’d stay away.

If you get a tablet you will inevitable start using it for more than just reading. If you have an Itunes account and an iPod and are familiar with that just go with the ipad. Maybe you can find an older generation or second hand one.

I have both an iPad and a Kindle Fire. The Kindle is amazing for reading and watching videos, but is a little bit glitchy when surfing the web. However, the iPad is excellent for surfing the web, watching videos, and is just ok for reading. If you want more of a tablet than a e-reader, I would go with iPad with Kindle app, because iBooks is not that great.

I have an iPad and the cheapest kindle they make. Free book lending if you're

An Amazon Prime member pretty much paid for the kindle (not available on the app). I read on the iPad, but not outdoors, like at the beach or pool, the glare is too bad. Plus I got this waterproof thing for the kindle which is pretty cool.

the iPad is now my default device for 90% of home computer use. Plus combine it with a cheap Apple TV and you can AirPlay watchESPN in HD. I used it for y'all's game last week.
