It’s not glamorous but house/business cleaning can be a lucrative business. Plus they can have the flexible hours she’s looking for. I know of a couple of businesses that were recently looking for someone new and were shocked at current rates.
It's wild what it costs to have a house cleaned now days.

So, I have this female friend who is going through a divorce that has been a stay at home mom for a few years, but wants to get back into the workforce. If she was a he, I’d hire him or send him to any of my buddies with construction companies. When she asked me for advice, I basically drew a blank. What do women with no college degree and kids do for work?! Does anyone know of any remote jobs or something with somewhat flexible hours I could advise her to look for?
Basic computer skills? Word/Excel/Outlook? If she is most likely to land in an administrative role, some temp staff companies do temp to hire and that can work out nicely. If she does not have skills and is near a Costco, they pay pretty well and some employees have made bank off of Costco stock. Not sure if they have an employee purchase program or some kind of stock options they offer, but I suspect the former.

She must have gotten a bad attorney during her divorce if she is having to work after it after being a stay at home wife during the marriage.

We have good HR and good supervisors who are expected to run the show with their direct reports, but we have 3-4 situations going on at any one time. But I am in the channel where every single call out comes through and it pains me to watch it. Last job was full of union negotiations, so current one isn’t as bad
And people wonder why they can’t make more money.

if you can’t show up to work on time and be present 94% of the time or more, you don’t deserve more money.

I use 94% bc that allows for about 15 late clock ins or absences per year.

I worked for a company once that had a 20 point system. 1 point for 5 mins or more late to 30. 2 points for 31 or more mins late or just being absent. If you worked for 20 days in a row without incident, 2 points came off.

so you could miss 12 days a year and basically have 0 points.

we fired multiple people each year bc they got to 20 points.

Have a lady/girl that works on our team. She started a couple months ago and things were fine, then she’d be non-responsive all afternoon and reply the next day that she had to take her dog in. Or, even better, she would let us know about 11 AM that she wasn’t coming in that day bc pookie wasn’t feeling good.
We will have to be done eventually... must be done immediately. Or something like that. I've found it better to get rid of her now, since you know it's coming at some point.

Hah...we had similar. There were notorious folks that would have points drop off and the following day, they'd put them back on. Just do the bare minumum.

It blows my mind the money one can make. There was a guy on a plant I used to sale too that quite his job there because his wife was bringing in the money on OF.
This.
An employee of mine has started an OF page to make additional dollars.
She has been doing it almost a year and is currently netting about $700 a week.

I would ask her OF page, but I'm assuming you don't know or with 'phd' in your name are smart enough not to answer**

Smart enough to not publish. **
She and I talk about the business aspect of what she is doing but it’s her job to do “marketing.”
To her credit, she approached me before doing to be sure it wouldn’t jeopardize her job.
I have been fascinated to the extent which she treats it as a business and approaches all facets professionally.

As someone who oversees hiring for my current company, A challenge I see coming is dealing with people's career choices from the past or side hustles. I currently have some of our team do internet background checks, but it is hard to find good people to work. If they have an fascinating past, who am I to judge? Now, my wife might not let it happen. Ha

In the service industry I've long said that if you care about your work, you are ahead of about 85% of the others and if you care and are competent, you are in an elite class. Finding people who exemplify that is challenging.

I came home from school when I was about 10 and told my dad that the lesson for the day at school was "don't judge a book by its cover". He told me that I had better be able to judge one by its cover or I would get 17'd over my entire life. Kind of applies to your situation IMO. Obviously people change and mistakes are made, but the best way to determine future behavior is by looking at past behavior in most cases. (in my experience).

Which is why listening to people whine about minimum wage is infuriating.

if you’ve been in the service industry for 2 years or longer and making less than $11/hr, it’s bc you can’t show up to work on time and do the simple things.

I still think "starting wage" is a better term. I recall someone very successful once saying that "People want to do what I do, but they don't want to do what I did." Other than people who simply don't have the capacity that many of us are blessed with, I think that statement often carries a lot of weight.

This hits home. The amount of people who have dog vet needs and family emergencies and get sick all the time and have internet outages is insane.
No joke. I have a lady here that called in today with the flu. For the 4th time this year.

Time to have an uncomfortable conversation.

It never gets easy to look them in the eye but I have gotten to where i don't feel bad when people fire themselves.

Oh, it's not uncomfortable to me. It's a two minute conversation between my 10 am meeting and lunch. "We're letting you go today. Chris is going to stay with you while you clean out your cube - you can return your laptop and badge to him. If you have additional questions, talk to HR. Best of luck."

Indeed. She actually resigned this week after only a few months. She moved across the country for this job then quit to work for another company that she is going to work remotely for that is in California.
