Not really advice, but ...

Basically all you have to do is call them up and join. Decide how much you want to donate and they'll be glad to take it. They're quite nice when you call them on the phone, and will take your pledge just about anyway you want to do it ... lump sum or monthly, credit card or check. Personally, I have them automatically charge my Visa each month.

Other than that, you don't do anything, nor do they other than send mail occasionally.

Get in now, consecutive years count a good bit. The minimum is not much, like 135.00. Keep that going even if you move away or you end up starting over like I did.

Your donation is tax deductible... They will send you info on how to claim the deduction this time every year.

Points quickly add up.

Welcome aboard. Always happy to see someone sign up.

If he's a grad student - I doubt he has a house thus he doesn't itemize his tax return - therefore his BC donation probably won't count. Or something like that.

True... Not enough minimum deductions to go long form. But still... Its a great deduction when the time comes.

Be prepared for the BDC to screw things up. Make sure you keep records of what you give and don't believe the employer gift matching BS.

My tax receipt I got in the mail for 2012 said I paid $195... I paid well over twice that amount.

This year I decided to pay my pledge in 3 equal payments. For my company to match my gift, I have to send in a form with my check. The BDC has 90 days --- three 17'n months, to fill out 5 lines & mail the form off. Apparently the BDC did not have time to mail in the matching gift form for 2 out of my 3 payments. I got a notice in July - 4 months after my March payment, that the form had been received too late. On my second payment everything went fine. Third payment was made in September and to date my company has not received the gift matching form.

I don't see how a club whose main job is to raise money can't take 2 minutes to fill out a form that would basically double my gift. It's the easiest money they would ever make but apparently they could care less. I'm not sure who's running the BDC but they're doing a ****** job.

I do the same process with World Vision & other charities --- never been a problem getting my gifts matched.

I thought the screw ups only happened to me, but it sounds a little more widespread. In my case, it wasn't very major though and a phone call cleared things. I think. Got my statement yesterday too and it was wrong too, but only by a very small amount.

Good advice here, but the best advice on this subject is just to go ahead do it. At the minimum, give the $100 minimum. You don't have to give gobs of money if you don't have it. But giving the $100 is just doing your part. IMO.

One other thing.....do it because you see the bigger picture - you want to help MSU succeed. Let points, and standing just be added benefits.
