I got him up into his bed and he seemed content, neither wanted another ambulance ride just to get released. We called the sister and told her they need to be in assisted living.
They are still going to fall in assisted living. It's sort of a law, your right to fall or.... so I thought as that is what I was told. No law exists law but it's just a fact. They cannot watch them 247 even in a nursing home but some places are better than others at protecting them from injuries even when they do fall.

The benefit of an assisted living place is there will be someone around when they do fall. My mother kept falling in an assisted living place until I had to move her to a more secure place that did work at preventing falls by various methods. Moved her, no more falls but it didn't matter, she still passed within a few weeks.

Bottom line, some people would rather die at home from a fall than go to one of those places. I have taken care of several, I had as many chose to stay at home and die sooner rather than leave. As long as they can think for themselves let them. Tell them what you can do and can't, let them decide if they have the ability to stay. It's gets harder when you have to decide for them when their minds leave them and they never seem to recognize it either... many a sleepless night.

Do what you can but things will progress to the end.

If you don't have the money to pay for a nice assisted living place, I don't think that's an irrational preference at all. Even if you do, I can get thinking you'd rather leave that money to the kids rather than spend $100k a year to have a diminished quality of life in assisted living and who knows how much for a good nursing home.

Agree. The state-paid ones are typically extremely substandard. And lack of money may be the reason he refused an ambulance. Maybe he doesn't have adequate insurance.

Your figures are low. Median annual cost for nursing home in Mississippi is $118,000 semi-private. About $125,000 annually for a private room.

I was referring to assisted living, not nursing homes. My numbers may still be low for nice ones though if the median cost of nursing home is $125k in Mississippi, but the costs of providing the care to qualify as a nursing home are still significantly higher than assisted living, so I may still be in the ballpark.

I was assuming something like apartment living crossed with summer camp, and thinking for one person you could probably get there for $100k a year. You can get a nice, interior access one bedroom apartment for three grand a month in a lot of places and those places will typically have work out facilities and a pool and cleaning staff. You add basically the cost of a nice cafeteria and the equivalent of summer camp activities for the residents plus extra staff but not skilled nursing, and you can probably cover all that and a profit for another $5k a month?

ETA:
This is a place I just happened to know of because a relative said it was nice and it'd be nice to be close to MSU and it says they have plans starting at $5,500 a month. But that could be just the independent living without food, so maybe still more than $8,333 if you are in the assisted living part and getting all your meals there. Also not sure how nice or high dollar it is.
