Isn't that the point? To check your priorities? To go without those things that bring you earthly satisfaction and grow closer to God as you go to him for help in removing certain things from your life? This doesn't even have to be about whether drinking alcohol is sinful. It simply is about giving up something material you enjoy in the name of strengthening your relationship with God.deltadawg1212 said:your giving up beer, liquor, fried foods? 2 of the three are sins in the first place and the third will kill you anyway.. I'd say if you think giving up beer, liquor, fried foods is a challenge, check your priorities...
I'm a Baptist. A Pinelake member at that.615dawg said:Living in the Baptist Belt as a non-Baptist is frustrating sometimes.
Offerings are different than sacrifices. And you can snag a Bible verse to back up just about any point you'd ever want to make. But it is way more than a collection of snippets for us to pick and choose our rules. It's God's love letter to EVERYONE.deltadawg1212 said:Quality of the sacrifice.
“And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering: but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell” (Gen. 4:3-5).
Abel winged his offering and we see it was rejected. Imagine standing at the gates of Heaven and when asked How you can relate your life to that of Jesus, telling the big man "hey man, I gave up beer and liquor and fried foods." sounds pretty silly does it not?
