Not that they do, but the lifestyle Southern Baptist "claim" they live, is closer to Mormon than being Catholic. I'm converting from being Baptist by the way.

your giving up beer, liquor, fried foods? 2 of the three are sins in the first place and the third will kill you anyway.. I'd say if you think giving up beer, liquor, fried foods is a challenge, check your priorities...
Isn't that the point? To check your priorities? To go without those things that bring you earthly satisfaction and grow closer to God as you go to him for help in removing certain things from your life? This doesn't even have to be about whether drinking alcohol is sinful. It simply is about giving up something material you enjoy in the name of strengthening your relationship with God.

Thank goodness God doesn't keep score. Nobody would have enough points to get into heaven.

Living in the Baptist Belt as a non-Baptist is frustrating sometimes.

Below is a copy of Allen Carr's The Easy Way To Stop Smoking. I am not a big gimmick guy or any BS like that but this book really makes you look at smoking and quitting in a different way and made it very easy to quit.

It is a simple read and is not filled with a ton of BS about how bad smoking is, we get that it is bad for you, obviously telling us that for years had made little difference.

The following is in a PDF format, I had no clue it was free to download. If for some reason it is not free, go to the bookstore and buy it, I think I paid around $9.00 a year or so back.

I screwed up after being done with smoking for a year and had a few during hunting season, found myself wanting more and read a certain chapter out of the book and got my head straight again.

It is worth 45 minutes of your time if it helps you stop smoking.

Amongst other things, I've given up the snooze button and am forcing myself to get out of bed everyday by 6 (even Saturday and Sunday).<div>
</div><div>Real Fact: the Trappist monks make such fantastic beer because they were required to fast, but fasting only applies to food. Therefore, they made an awesome beer out of the grains they had.</div>

I know it's 40 days of giving up something for some reason, so I'd still like to play this game.

Is it supposed to be giving up something that is really bad for you, or something that will be hard to give up?

If it's something bad, that's easy... cigarettes.
If it's something hard, masturbating.

I'm a Baptist. A Pinelake member at that.

And I don't know if I nailed it or not. I recently read that becoming a Christian should be more like falling in love and less like following a rule book. Any steps you take toward opening up that relationship is a good thing. At least I think so.

Quality of the sacrifice.

“And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Jehovah. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering: but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell” (Gen. 4:3-5).

Abel winged his offering and we see it was rejected. Imagine standing at the gates of Heaven and when asked How you can relate your life to that of Jesus, telling the big man "hey man, I gave up beer and liquor and fried foods." sounds pretty silly does it not?
Offerings are different than sacrifices. And you can snag a Bible verse to back up just about any point you'd ever want to make. But it is way more than a collection of snippets for us to pick and choose our rules. It's God's love letter to EVERYONE.

Probably won't have to wait to the pearly gates to tell him. He knows what you're giving up, why you're doing it, the struggles you have with it, loves you when you fail at it, loves you when you succeed at it. I don't like to get all judgey on other people's faith, but it sounds like you're saying that because he does something YOU consider sinful, that even though he's trying to give it up, God is going to find that trivial, ridiculous, and not worthy. That's a heartbreaking thought. And a fairly egotistical one at that.

to rub in your ignorance, Jesus' 1st miracle of turning water into wine came about because the wedding party had run out of wine, so he made MORE (and it was better wine than the first). Now tell me again why alcohol is a sin?

Just because a man stands behind a pulpit doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about.

"Of what use was your comparative analysis of various man-contrived alleged sacrifices?"

Also, the Cain/Abel narrative serves to demonstrate less that Cain's sacrifice was unacceptable and more to demonstrate that the only acceptable sacrifice is one covered in remitted blood. The Scarlet Thread of Redemption is all through Holy Scripture.

Saint Paul spends much time in Romans explaining that the primary purpose of the law (rules of conduct) is to demonstrate how impossible it is through human effort to attain righteousness that leads to salvation.

I've been helped immensely by understanding this principle with a simple illustration. The rules are like a mirror. A mirror shows you how poorly you look. But a mirror does nothing to clean you up. That is not the purpose of the mirror. In like manner, following the rules does not clean you up; that is, it doesn't bring about righteousness that leads to salvation. And those whose religious effort is centered around the following of rules that they hope will lead to righteousness are in for a rude awakening. Titus 3:5; Isaiah 64:6 (even our righteous acts are as filthy rags to Yahweh).

Accordingly, Lent and the giving up of certain behaviors has nothing to do with ultimate righteousness. But, if done correctly and humbly, it can go a long way toward sanctification.

And that concludes today's rabbinical studies programming. Please return to your regularly scheduled rant.

sounds pretty silly does it not?

If he considers it to be a vice he struggles with isn't that what matters? Suppose one were to give up gambling for Lent but one was not a gambler in the first place. That would be silly.

I've been eating this way for about a month, along with giving up Diet Mountain Dews(18 year addiction) and coffee. I honestly feel like a new man.

Celebid? That isn't a 17ing word. Like I said, you obviously know nothing about the crowd that attends music festivals, and I'm aware that the Hangout Fest won't have the same type of crowd as Wakarusa, Summer Camp, All Good or etc.

Attempting to get in shape in order to look good on the beach makes you a douche. Most people would agree.

I was in a McDonalds in Memphis a couple of weeks ago and witnessed two hood rats trying to haggle over the price of a filet-o-fish value meal. And I quote, "I ain't neva paid not 6 dollas for no filet-o-fish." The girl working said something to the effect of well I'm pretty sure the price has been the same for like 5 years. They got pissed and just walked out.

As far a lent for me...should be smoking, but who am I kidding. So I'll go w/soft drinks as well because I have an unhealthy addiction to Sonic drinks.
