I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. I think think this is how it should work. Unfortunately, politicians aren't independent thinkers and actors anymore. Maybe they never were. Most of the time if you elect a Democrat, or a Republican, they succumb to the pressure to vote with their party, especially on key pieces of legislation. I just don't think you can trust an elected official to stand against his party on high profile pieces of legislation. If that were the case, the ACA, for example, would never have passed. Some have the courage to do it, but most fall in line and vote how they are told. Until politicians become more independent and vote based on what they actually believe, I think electing a Democrat, if you are a conservative, or a Republican, if you are a liberal, is too great of a risk.
