Got the results of my physical back today and I’ve got the ‘beetus.

It wasn’t a total surprise. Both of my parents have it. My grandfather had it. My great grandfather and great great grandfather had it. Several of my aunts, uncles, great aunts, & great uncles have it. My niece has it. Plus, I’ve been “pre-diabetic” for about half my life. We’re like the Skywalkers, but instead of high midi-chlorian levels, it’s high A1C & glucose.

Anybody else here living with diabetes? Any advice?

I don't , but most of my family did, Mom, Aunt, Uncle and grandmother, did, and it got them.
Watch your weight, keep it down, . Avoid sugar, (the obvious).

Yeah, I think it was the Red Bulls that did me in. I’m between 220 & 230 at any given time. I’m 6’3”, but I could stand to lose a little.

If it tastes good, spit it out!
I was talking to the doctor about what fruits I can & can’t eat. Apparently, all of the fruits I love (bananas, oranges, watermelons, grapes) are bad for me and all the fruits I dislike (peaches, berries, mangoes) are what I need to focus on. Apples were the only “good for me” fruit that I actually eat.

I have been in decent shape most of my life, and watched out for my health.
Played golf, tennis, stayed active, etc. but time will win. ...Undefeated.
We do the best we can, till it's time. Been very lax, lately....

Yeah, honestly, it was a wake up call. I needed to make some changes and unfortunately, this is probably what needed to happen for me to make those changes.

Sometimes a good wake up call is just what you need. I got mine about 15 years ago. Was overweight, borderline diabetic & high blood pressure. My Dr chewed my a$$ out. It was just what I needed. Started eating better & got pretty religious about 4-5 days per week of moderate exercise (even just walking 30 minutes can do wonders). Lost 30 pounds. Still on a moderate level of BP meds & have to keep an eye on blood sugar, but overall not too bad. Good luck to you. Only recommendation I have is modify your diet & get consist exercise. Take the meds if you need them but the goal is to limit those as much as you can.

I’ve always been pretty small. In my 50s I started getting the paper that says your bmi indicates you’re overweight. If I hit the ideal weight for my height, I feel like I’d be a toothpick. I’m 6 feet with a pre diabetes A1C. Of course over the past three years or so I gained about 20 bounds. But even at 183 I got the overweight warning.

IMO, BMI is garbage, At one point, and for a long time I was at, 183lb , and body fat of 13 percent, and the chart said I was over weight., 6ft.

I’ve been flirting with it the last few years. A1C is still fine but my fasting glucose was in the 120s when I went in for my yearly in March. I quit drinking not quite a year ago. Started hitting the gym consistently after I went to the doctor. With no significant diet changes, I’m down to 276 from 295 (6’3) since March. I’m trying to ultimately get down to about 240 and see how that goes. Just saying that to say that even if you make some really modest diet changes and start hitting the gym 3-4 days per week, I would bet you’ll see some differences in your BG and A1C. But I’m in the same boat as you, probably fighting a losing battle as both of my parents have it, and three out of four grandparents. Just trying to delay it as long as possible.

What is a good A1C reading?

I'm at 6.2 and definitely could stand to lose some weight.

Mine was 6.3 in 2022. They called that “pre-diabetic”. I think anything over 6.4 is diabetes, but you should really talk to a doctor.

Mine is 10.9, or at least it was last week.

ETA: mine has hovered in that 5-6 range for a decade and I’ve never taken it seriously.

Had my wake up call about a year and a half ago. I'm 6 ft. and had gotten up to 260 lbs and at my check-up my A1c was 5.6 and my doctor told me I was borderline pre-diabetic. This was right after my best friend and my brother had been diagnosed with diabetes. I started watching my diet and lost some weight, but really started losing weight and changing my body when I started lifting weights 3-4 days a week and going on walks. I'm down to 220 now and with a goal of 195-200, but it's a slow process. Much easier to get out of shape than to get back in shape!

I’m right there with you. I’ve been fighting being prediabetic by diet for 4-5 years. Mostly losing that fight. From Thanksgiving to New Years I lived like it was my last day. When i went for my fasting lab it was bad. From my recent calcium score, and my A1C my outlook for the next 2-3 years isn’t good.

I started out walking. I added bodyweight fitness. Didn’t realize how weak I’d gotten sitting on my *** all day. 2 torn rotator cuffs, torn meniscus, and both ankles with Achilles tendinitis doesn’t help. Joined the gym a month ago. Haven’t lost weight, but I’m definitely feeling better. Also my most recent lab came back and I cut my A1C in half in 3 months. So that’s good news.

I’m considering taking Ceylon cinnamon, ACV, and pre soaked chia seeds to help with my glucose intolerance.

Kind of glad this thread popped up because I was wanting to ask about an older thread. Someone was talking about an over the counter supplement they were taking that helped with their blood sugar. Would like to know what that was.

The antirejection meds for the new liver skyrocket my glucose and BP, not sure about A1C. So im guessing its a matter of time. They won't put me.on insulin but my glucose is 180 non fasting every time I go in for a blood test around 11. Im 6-3 245 down from 310 (some water/ascites) weight mixed in.

I weighed 220 before I got sick, dropped to 175 then skyrocketed

I don't have diabeetus and therefore don't nee Wilford's diabeetus testing supplies, but I can tell you how to treat it with no medications and make you look and feel great---carnivore diet. Don't dismiss it because it sounds stupid or someone on this board says it stupid, or because your doctor doesn't know **** about it. Just research it by looking up Dr. Ken Berry.

Doing some research, it looks like Berberine is good for blood glucose regulation.

Cut your carbohydrates as well as the obvious sugar. Carbs turn into sugar in the body. Also consider a 36 hour fast once a week. That will reset your body.

Around 5.0 My doc says ideal is 4.7, but she tends to be very careful in such things.
6.0 -6.5 is pre-diabetic. Anything over that is Type II.
5'11, 178 nekkid. Could stand to lose a few, but that's the same as I was in college - it's just in different places now.

Had the same thing happen to me. Last October my doc scolded me about my hbp, cholesterol and glucose levels. I'm 6 foot and weighed 224 lbs. In the last 10 months I've lost almost 40 pounds (and I'm 57 yo). No miracle or fad diet. I started eating sensibly and exercising. I didn't realize how outta shape I really was until I started exercising. I now walk 2.25 miles in a little over 30 mins 5 days a week.

That’s awesome. Same with me. A few months in my sister asked me how my diet was going. I said it’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle change.
