I hope you get it under control. I have a family member who has lost part of his foot and is very likely about to have it amputated up to his calf. The most frustrating part is that this was mostly preventable.

Amputation (and maybe blindness) is probably my biggest fear in this whole thing. I had a great uncle that lost his whole leg (after 3 separate amputations - foot, to the knee, to the hip) and spent last year of his life blind.

That said, after I got the diagnosis, I joked with my wife that maybe I could become the next Oscar Pistorius. She asked me who that was. She didn’t think it was funny once I told her.

I do appreciate that you're taking this with a sense of humor.
Yeah, I mean… if I’m being honest, I’m actually really scared and I was devastated as the doctor was giving me the results, but making jokes about it is my default, like it somehow makes it less devastating if I can make light of it. Plus, I have a pretty dark sense of humor. My wife doesn’t love that I make jokes about my own mortality (she might be more scared than I am), but it’s how I cope.

Get a constant glucose monitor. I've been dealing with diabeetus since 1995. I watched carbs and tried to keep my A1c down but it was a struggle. I hated finger.sticks and got to where I wasn't checking enough. Since getting the Dexcom and just being able to look at my phone anytime, my A1c has stayed between 5 and 6.5. Best thing to come along for me. 30 years and I'v never had to use insulin.
Also, Whiskey has no carbs! My blood glucose actually goes down when I have a couple.

Personally, I cut the carbs and started eating lean proteins and mine dropped 3 points just by doing that.
And obviously no sugar or processed foods.
Loss of weight has followed but still got a ways to go.
My goal is to get off the Metformin that I am currently taking.
But all people are different and genetics are a part of the equation.
I pray that you are able to get in front of it.

That possessed will get you if you don’t watch it.

I had somebody mention wine to me, but I’ve been sober almost 20 years. 😭

I’m not to regular monitoring yet, but it’s probably coming. I have a follow-up in a month. I did prick my finger once this week to use a home kit “just to see” and yeah that will get old real quick.

Wine is a big no for sugar but if you don't drink at all you won't have to worry. My endocrinologist told me 20 years ago that a couple of drinks with a cigar on the weekend would do me far more good than harm. Wish he was still my doctor. On the finger sticks, they wanted me to do it 4x a day. That was murder.

Life hack on weight/resistance training if you just want to reshape/cut/lose weight....not bulk: get an infrared sauna and do a 20 minute dumbbell or resistance band workout in it. You'll have to build up to the right temp. Drink water and step out if you get light headed.

If you really don't mind working out add a 30 minute stretch, Pilates(highly recommend as you are mostly laying on your back like an ole missy sorority girl), or yoga to it. That's a max 50 minute workout in infrared heat.....it's a game changer. Besides the weight loss there are other ancillary benefits to the infrared sauna that would help your situation....not a doctor!
