OT: More are running from Jackson, MS

Southwest Airlines announced the are pulling their airline out of the Jackson airport during June of 2014. ...Not enough local demand stated as reason.

Southwest is a skiddish airline anyway. They bought up AirTran and pulled them out of Huntsville immediately. Yet, they fly into Panama City, FL? Never really got that.

SWA tried to pull out a while back and decided to stay. I wonder if any of this is related to Lumumba throwing out the airport board and stocking it with his buddies.

Yes...they beat some other top 20 cities to get it.** To be accurate, Madison already has an airport...albeit small.

This is not surprising. Southwest rarely made money in JAN. The station was opened as a favor for former Sen. Trent Lott who lobbied for them. Look for a number of other markets to be dropped because of the elimination of the Wright Amendment. But Southwest has wanted out of Jackson for a long time. The market in JAN continues to shrink to early 1990's levels.

One of those guys he appointed did some awful things at his previous employment. He was fired on the spot. That's all ill say.

What is "international" about Jackson International. Do they have international flights?

Just wondering. But Huntsville does have several international cargo flights to two or three destinations so the designation is legitimate, even though there are no international passenger flights.

Same question for Birmingham International.

That is because they were guaranteed a profit to enter PC or their fuel would be paid for by the government. (Local)

Two things I have heard:

1) they have international cargo flights

2) they have the National Guard flights in and out of there

Don't have any clue to the validity of either.

Occasionally they do. Designating an airport as an international airport just means that you can fly a plane between that airport and an international destination.

An International Airport is defined by having an immigration or customs office on the premises.Usually it's located within the airport terminal building. Has nothing to do with having international passenger or cargo flghts.

I hope I am wrong, but I seriously doubt you will see fares on United like $59 to Houston once Southwest pulls out. Airlines match their fares in markets where they fly, that's why cities and airports love having Southwest as a tenant. I think you are getting ready to see airfares in Jackson go up significantly - pay close attention after summer 2014.

5 years ago you could fly to Atlanta, Memphis, Cincinnati, Washington Reagan, and Detroit on Delta out of Jackson - now its Atlanta only. Southwest had flights to BWI, Houston, Orlando, and Chicago Midway and those are all gone or will be by June.

Once American and US Airways complete their merger you will have 3 airlines and 6 non-stop destinations out of Jackson. I think the Washington DC flight will be at risk due to US Airways and American having to divest service at Reagan Airport as part of the merger though I know our congressional delegation will lobby hard to keep that one for their own convenience.

American - Dallas
US Airways - Charlotte, Washington DC
Delta - Atlanta
United - Houston, Chicago

That's a pretty poor lineup when you consider markets like Pensacola and NW Arkansas each have 10-15 non-stop cities.

I am wondering how much of an impact Memphis getting Southwest has on this. Many of the Guard members at our base work at the airport in various capacities. I was told that for Southwest to be truly successful in Memphis, they would have to offer enough incentive to steal the business from at least 2 of 3 (Jax, LR, Nash). Delta pulled out of Mem as a hub and has been rapidly reducing flights since Southwest came in. Good riddance to Delta. Their pricing was robbery. Memphis is currently doing major overhaul on one concourse and has just added a huge new parking facility. This is the all in moment for Memphis. Play it right and the airport can be more than just a FedEx hub.

An international flight can stop there and refuel without having to go through customs, thus, it is an international flight.

JAN is the airport for the most of the entire Mississippi market. If Soutwest isn't profitable there, it is not a reflection solely on Jackson.

Memphis did all that work because Delta wanted it several years ago. Now they've decided to pull out. Thanks Delta.

And the Delta - Northwest merger also played a big role in pulling out. My stepbrother is a pilot for Delta (was with Northwest) so I hear the very occasional tidbit from my stepfather.

My commercial pilot friend tells me that the rumor is that Southwest is also pulling out of Key West and somewhere in the northern plains in order to reallocate those aircraft to more lucrative routes (the more lucrative part is obvious, of course). Apparently it's fallout from the Wright Amendment, which restricts where you can fly out of Love Field, being lifted. There's obviously a lot of Mississippi's population within 60 miles of the Jackson Airport, but once you get 60 miles away, there's usually a better option, even if it's an extra thirty minutes of driving.

The catchment area that the Jackson airport serves, extends north of Grenada, east to Meridian, south to Hattiesburg and west to Monroe, la. JAN is not the only commercial airport in that area but it has the best options. That's approximately half of Mississippi's population. But people closer to MEM and MSY use those airports, and they offer a lot more options.
