Either place is great. If they want easy access to big name stores then Tupelo is the place they need to live. There are several Oregon families living in Aberdeen but I wouldn't recommend it.
DO NOT LET THEM BUY A HOME IN ABERDEEN! But do tell them that the best fried chicken livers in the state of Ms are at the Texaco on 45 in Aberdeen.

“Almond growers” from California, now living in rural Mississippi. Riiiigggghhht.
Cost of living (and housing in certain areas) in California is sky high.

I have California kin who’ve moved back to the South where the real estate bang for the buck is much better.

If bang for your buck is the primary concern then Aberdeen might be an option. Mrs showed me a real estate listing in Aberdeen recently. House was built in the early nineties, big lot, what was at the time a good neighborhood on the edge of town. It had been maintained but was dated and due a makeover due to its age. House was over 3000 sq feet. It was listed for $99,000. Sounds great until you buy it and realize that nobody will give you $75000 unless you find some sucker from the West Coast.

I second that. A trucker from out of state was in there getting some and said the same. I try to get by there at least once a month.

Depends on how one looks at it. The price per square foot is astronomically higher in California, however the rate of appreciation is likely much higher/faster than in rural MS. If one has the money and wants a larger return, a property in CA might be the way to go.

Want to start a fight in Amory, declare your allegiance to either Bills or Country Boys and diss the other and it’s on like Donkey Kong.
What’s the little place near the railroad bridge just down from the Chevrolet dealership? They have a fried steak sandwich that is divine. Seems like I remember it being Knights drive in or something like that.

For both of these, it depends. My part of the PNW was no humidity and mixed in politics but leaning conservative. Get into north Idaho and you’re going real conservative.

Yeah, the mountains are more than just a geographical divide in Washington. Extremely different attitudes once you cross over into the eastern agricultural areas.

My memory of the two major Monroe County towns of Aberdeen and Amory is that you will see very quickly the difference in an old railroad town and an old plantation town. I'll leave it at that.

I was living in a major city in the East in 2020, and I’d literally never seen a Trump sign in a yard in the city. Met maybe 5 quiet supporters. Did a Yellowstone trip in the fall then went over to Bozeman. Eating dinner there the first night, and a bunch of trucks come roaring down the main road with people in the back waving Trump flags for an impromptu parade, and I was like “Wow, I forgot this existed”

Following on SMM and your comments on WA, I always think of this map when people make assumptions and generalizations about whole states/regions. MA, RI & HI only states to fully qualify as team blue and WV, and surprisingly OK team red. Some states more blue than I would have guessed, some more red.

I remember this song from "Morning with Buddy and Kay". It is a fine song but two observations that doesn't exactly make it a Chamber of Commerce boon. First it kind of disses the agriculture industry with the line "People keep on farming with very little pay" I guess they couldn't think of anything else to rhyme with 'Tenn-Tom waterway'. The second is the 'money' line where the song really short-sells when they say, "If you're ever in the south-land and have no place to go, come on down and visit us in good ol' Tupelo". It kind of says, come see us only if you have absolutely nothing else better to do. LOL. Wonder if the song is still used?

Knew a bunch of folks who relocated from California to SC in the early 90s due to a company move. Most of em had many years left on their mortgages in CA but were able to pay cash for huge really nice homes in SC with their equity.
