I will be going to Gulf Shores in early June and have a 4 and 6 year old for about three days. Is it worth the trip over to Pensacola to go to the naval air museum or save that until the kids are older and we are down there longer?

I think so, especially if it is a bad beach day. We have done it and enjoyed it

If you do go ...

Definitely worth it.

they have a reasonable Lunch Cafe (Cubi Bar Cafe) right in the museum and it is the actual reconstruction of the Officers’ Club at NAS Cubi Point in the Philippines complete with all the memorabilia from the walls and autographs over the years. Its Open daily 10:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Brings back a lot of old memories.

Cupic Point was the base. Subic Bay I believe was the location.

At any rate I mentioned this museum in the Gulf Shores thread. It is the best aviation museum I have ever been to and I have been to a lot of them in several different countries. And the fact that it is as nice as it is and admission is free is mind blowing.

Short drive from Orange Beach. The museum is quite big with tons of cool airplanes from every era and war. Look for the A-1 Skyraider on display with a huge hole in one of the prop blades resulting from a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. There's also a WWII Japanese Mitsubishi plane with bullet holes in the starboard wing. Really cool stuff.

both on opposite sides of Subic Bay, about 90 miles nw of Manila. Until a few years ago it was the FedEx asia hub...
the Officer's club at Cubi was infamous for debauchery!

Lots of hands on stuff for kids and

There is an old civil war fort just down the road. And it's all free!

Fort Pickens is just across the bay, but it would take a couple of hours to drive there.

You can also climb the old lighthouse right across from the Naval Aviation Museum if you get there early on a weekday. Beautiful old lighthouse.

Depends on the 4 and 6 year old.

Took my oldest son one rainy beach day when he was 5.
They had dozens of cockpits you could climb in and flip the switches and move the stick and push the rudders.
We got in every one.
