Let me start by saying that I currently serve in the C-Suite of a company that was struggling before my arrival nearly 6 years ago. Without giving too much away this is in an industry that is hyper-competitive with lots of turnover.

A bragger I am not, but I've almost single-handedly led us to unprecedent success that the company hasn't seen in over 60 years. I've been able to consistently recruit the best talent and put them in positions to succeed and it's worked great.

Not to say that I'm perfect because I'm certainly not, I am extremely ambitious and earlier in my career I was fired or left abruptly from every company I worked for. But the company I'm at now took a chance on me and it's helped me to turn my life around. I've stopped drinking and my ex-wife and I are even reconciling.

Enough time has passed and I feel like I've reached my ceiling at my current company. I'm proud of what I've accomplished but I feel dissatisfied and can't help wanting more.

I like my current company but don't love it, and I will probably have this job as long as I want - no matter the results going forward. Hell, they'll probably build a statue of me before it's all said and done.

So here's the kicker: There have been two larger competitors that have recently had jobs come open and they both are actively pursuing me. I've been in discussions with them since last month and both are making offers that would make me the highest paid in my position in the entire country.

Given that my current employer found out, they have offered me a similar contract but I can't make myself sign it. They are beginning to get restless since we're closing in on EOY and we're on track for another good finish, possibly our best.

On the other hand, the two other companies are much more prestigious and offer a much higher ceiling for my career. Both companies are located in nicer cities as well. (I pretend to love the town I'm in now but it's kind of a dump).

Now, what would you do in my situation? Go for more and scratch the itch? Or settle for what I have now and wonder what-if?

Even though this is a long post, I hope I get some helpful input!

Wait just a damn minute, I know that story in and out front to back. This is Dan Mullen writing in from UNLV. I'd know that storyline anywhere after years of hearing it!**

It should be about fit and what makes you happy. PERIOD. It should never be about money. I know that might not be the most popular opinion but I ran into an issue years ago. I was hired on by a company after interned there that couldn't pay me much initially but said it would get better. I absolutely loved my job and the laid back work environment and didn't want to leave. I was newly married with a kid so it was a very hard decision. I could have left and took a job making a good bit more initially, but would be in a much stricter work environment and I would have hated it. So I had to weigh my options. I stuck with the first company and have never regretted it. I've learned the importance of working a job that you don't even consider a job. I even look forward to coming to the office everyday. The ole saying about the grass being greener on the other side has truth in it. It might appear better but you have to consider all factors that go into it(I'm sure you have) There is also something to say for loyalty to the employer you have. They took a chance on you and it appears that they are taking steps to be competitive to keep you. That means they value you. Of course there are factors that I don't even know about because I don't know your age, married status, kids etc. All of that are important thing to consider as well. Just my two cents.

Your rival company wants you to leave, and I agree with them. Shoot your shot!

Take the Florida job and stay away from Baton Rouge, unless the compensation is considerably more than Florida's, plus, it's not certain that they can meet all the bills, given what just happened there. It's hard to go to work for your arch rival and be successful. Gainesville is a nicer city than Baton Rouge. It's even away from most of the hurricane damage.

The bold letter acrostic is the first thing that popped out to me when I first read the OP. When I first read the thread name, I thought "This will be interesting, asking the SPS for career advice"!

Well done, BDF.
Yes, outstanding. Might qualify for post of the month. Can you go post it on NAFOOM, or even the ON3 equivalent of this board?

Since you don’t love your current job, the money won’t matter. Take the new job and get your heart pumping like a young man again!

Go for the bigger fish. If your ceiling is exhausted where you are, it’s a no-brainer. Believe me, I have become somewhat of a career nomad and my bank account has thanked me for it!

This assumes he can get the Florida job. But right now I’d stay the hell away from Baton Rouge, even if it means staying in Oxford. No president, no AD, and a nut job of a governor calling the shots. And trying to weasel out of the buyout on their former coach. 17 that.

It sounds like you know that you've got access to a PJ that takes you to 30A every Monday-Weds, and then you get to come back to work on Thursday and get to claim all the credit for what work was done. Also, if you've got a top tier new media team putting out material for you (just assuming here), then they make you look really committed. I'd push your current company to match any offer since they are likely happy with your performance. Then, I think you can sit back a few years and really focus on your dream job. That would be my take. Good luck, and try to finish the year strong to fortify your position.

My question would be: Does your boss recognize top talent and let it do its job? Or, does it go with the guy who is less talented but has been with the company longer. Said guy has issues with calling in sick and fumbling simple projects, but he's now reached "friend" level with the boss. The company wouldn't perform as well, but the boss knows he's safe regardless. So, you're probably going to to have to "hit the portal" to get what's yours. Hopefully your boss recognizes the talent and rewards you.

Retire now. Pack your suitcases full of money and buy a yacht to sail the seven seas with a Classic Laddlie in the left hand and the helm in the right. Leave the EX behind. Find an Asian beauty to make your sandwiches and drinks. Three sheets to the wind is the life.

I worked for a company for 17 years and my path was pretty much identical. I was told that I was the first " Free Agent" in my industry. Mon ey was great, The grass truly not greener on the other side. Coast, enjoy your prestige and power.
