I live in oak grove and a lot of people live out this way for schools. Sumrall area is very hot area due to their school. And if you want to live in country, then oak grove, sumrall, and ohlo would be your areas. With your range you could even go purvis or seminary. The rental market is hot as well. Tornado contributed to that. Very few to choose from. I'd look first on Craigslistl then maybe ask a real estate agent.

Everything he said. I live in oak grove as well and really like it. Id look down old 11 between oak grove and purvis or 589 between oak grove and Sumrall

The Hattiesburg metro area is just too busy for my taste. A lot of low lifes moved to the area after New Orleans became a war zone during Katrina in 2005. If I was forced to pick though, I would probably choose Petal for its great schools, good neighborhoods, and proximity to Hattiesburg. Can't beat good ole Wayne County in my mind though. I can be in Hattiesburg or Meridian in under an hour, but still live out in the country away from all the bigger city problems. Plus 10 miles from my house is Waynesboro, which has most everything you need while still being a small town.

I'm off 589 between OG and Sumrall and we love it. Great schools and short commutes to work, shopping, etc. May be tougher to find a rental in this area than it would be in older parts of Oak Grove though. But like others have said anywhere in Lamar County is the way to go.

I would stay out of Purvis proper. There are parts of what I would consider oak grove that have a purvis address that are o.k. but once you hit the town of Purvis, I always get a cousin love kind of vibe.

The city of hattiesburg is spiraling downward so you probably want to pick sumrall or maybe petal. I think my choice would be sumrall.

The city of Hattiesburg has grown in leaps and bounds over the past 15 years, especially out towards Hwy 98 West. IMO there isn't much in Jackson or Mobile that I can't find in Hattiesburg these days. On the flip side, I hear of a lot more crime happening to people who visit Hattiesburg. Apparently folks with a certain model Ford F150 are easy prey for getting their locks popped with a little hand tool that thieves are using now in the Burg.

One area no one has mentioned is the southern part of Jones County, around Moselle. A lot of new development in that area the last 5 years or so. Better schools than Sumrall/Seminary and not nearly as overcrowded as Oak Grove.

Figures that a guy from Waynesboro would recommend Petal as viable option to live. Look, the city of Hattiesburg has a lower crime rate than most major cities in Mississippi has been experiencing a good amount of change for the better. There are many safe and affordable options for people looking to move into the city. The original poster preferred to live in the country. The ONLY area that I would recommend to him is the Oak Grove area. Many options around 589 and Richburg road. Also towards Sumrall or Oloh. I don't think I could sleep knowing that I recommended Petal as a good place to live for a newcomer to the area. Petal = Pearl

Figures a guy from Oak Grove would get all upset about a Petal recommendation. I never have cared for the pious attitude most Oak Grovers seem to emit, and that's why I never go out of my way to say good things about that area. My poo poo stinks too much, so I guess I identify better with Petal folks.

Petal is very viable in that they have the best public school system in the Hattiesburg area with Oak Grove schools being a strong second. If I had children and was moving in the Hattiesburg area, I'd take a very close look at Petal. What with the recently opened Evelyn Gandy Parkway, Petal's going to grow.

The other areas mentioned (Oak Grove, Sumrall, southern Jones County) are all very good, high-growth areas as well with very good public schools. If you want to explore private school options, Hattiesburg also has two very good K-12 private schools-- Sacred Heart is the local Catholic school (it's a 1A school in MHSAA) and is located in downtown Hattiesburg. Presbyterian Christian School is a AAA school in MAIS.
