As a dad with young kids, this would obviously present an issue. Am I supposed to send my 7 year old in alone because she likes the window?

What about when I fly with my 91 year old mother? Happens once a year. She can't get herself down the jetway to her seat.
As long as you book your kids or parent on the same reservation as yours or whoevers you can all go in with the earliest persons group.

If they're never going to enforce carry on size, how about just getting rid of carry on luggage all together. Nothing bigger than a backpack you can slide under the seat in front.

Is there really any reason you have to carry a roller case with half your three week's vacation in it onto the plane?

No more stuffing oversized crates into the bin, jostling for a spot nowhere near your seat, getting up to get that super-important thing that just can't wait until everyone's boarded ...Redesign the planes without the attic and you have a bit more space.

I'm generally an 'aisle-only' person. I luckily got to silver status last year/this year however I'm running a little short on spending this year and so Ive debated adding some trips to get to the qualification or just let it run out. But this policy might make me consider trying to keep the status for next year so im not forced to check carryon bags with standard econ aisle seats. Or atleast buy the priority boarding on future trips.

no. i don't check any bags for any travel, whether it is 2 days or 3 weeks. making people like me wait at baggage claim is a terrible idea.

It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make ...especially if you're one of the guys who drags Santa's sack onto the plane for longer trips 😋

So, if you have a family of three, each one is boarded separately?
Sounds like a move in the wrong direction if so
No. As long as you book the reservation together, you can all go on whichever person is earliest from what has been reported.
From other article(s)---"Beginning with Group 4, passengers with window seats will board first, followed by those with middle seats and then aisle seats. People on the same reservation, such as families, can board together, United said.

Because I’m 15 min away from EWR, I tried to book all my flights through United. Don’t fly a lot but enough overseas business class trips got me 1K status. They do take care of me. Missed my 9am flight back after my Oktoberfes/Conf trip. United automatically rebooked me on th next flight (3pm). Saved me from having to explain to the boss why I had to stay an extra night.

Thats why I fly United. They treat 1k status really well. I fly business class for work, and I am usually upgraded to business for my personal travel.

Nah- if I am going 3 weeks- my carry on has only the basics baby...I am not going to take 3 weeks off and worry about what I can fit into a tiny carry on. - That is just me though... :)

Just get the United Explorer card. Comes with silver.

Easiest way to expedite boarding is to make checked bags free and charge a meaningful rate for overhead baggage.
This would satisfy two of the airlines major complaints that lead to boarding issues:
  1. Late arriving customers (in order to check bags need to arrive earlier)
  2. Less people bringing bags on plane would allow for people to board and deplane faster. Which will speed up turnarounds.
No!!!! I never check luggage.
The answer is not more checked bags. That process is always a cluster. It's not hard to place your appropriately sized luggage overhead. Airlines have started enforcing the size limits which helps immensely.

Question on that - are you then working gold from silver or do you have to meet the full requirement?

Don’t know, but I assume you have to earn gold with the full requirements.

I’m lifetime gold and unfortunately don’t get a head start on platinum/1K.

Explorer card gives you the same exact thing from day 1 to millions of miles. Priority boarding- right after disability and kids, 1st class and Business. You get 1 checked bag free both ways for up to 2 on your card, you get club passes.
The card adds up points pretty fast as well- but finding points on anything equal almost nothing anyway.
It is $525 a year but if you are traveling from a United Hub- so worth it

^^ Airlines way overthinking it. The time consuming thing is everybody looking for overhead bin space. Assign specific overhead bin space to seat and problem is solved.
All caused by people who refuse to check bags

My problem with checking bags is the large delay in getting your bag after landing so the charging a fee part might not apply to many people who bypass for time and not money. Also, wow do you ask to get the priority boarding? Ive never seen agents do anything for the people who gate check other than 'thank you'.
By some miracle a couple weeks ago we flew into Philly and our bags beat us to the carousel.

Thanks, although I assumed people would just believe me, as I just flew United. Basic Economy charges for carry-ons, while Economy and Economy Plus do not (but tix are more, of course). The easiest solution to much of the overhead bin storage problem is to simply have people put their carry-ons in, vertically, not horizontally, so more can fit in the same space - but the FA's don't tell people that when they get on board and it would be an easy thing to do as people enter the cabin (could even include a simple sign).

https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/...estricts full-sized carry,and a free carry-on.

Why would anyone pay to check bags unless they simply had a ridiculous amount of luggage? It's not worth the time typically lost waiting for luggage - I can carry a week's worth of stuff (and my wife's stuff she can't fit in hers, lol) in my carry-on and personal bag and if I were going anywhere longer than a week, I could just do laundry.

You’ve obviously never traveled with my wife. And every time we come home she says, hmmm I barely wore most of this stuff. I was referring to the people with insanely large carry ons

We always fly American and if you have their credit card you get 1 free bag per ticket

I’ve got the explorer (95/yr) + club membership. Explorer gives you silver, 2 club passes and boarding zone 2. Gold/platinum/1K is zone 1.

If you’re paying 525/yr, think you have the united club credit card (not sure what benefits it has). Used to have that but went down to explorer since I needed a united card, but dropped the lounge membership out of spite - the lounges were pretty terrible at EWR pre-pandemic after they made the main lounge a Polaris lounge and everyone was crammed into the upstairs lounge near C72.

Think you and newell are both right here. I never check unless I’m traveling international for more than a week or traveling with the SO - and not in the mood to argue. Two different styles. I want to max out the lounge booze and walk onto the plane just before they shut the door. She wants to be first in line.

To avoid the problems being discussed here.

Also. dropping that lug of a suitcase onto the roller and strolling around the airport free and unencumbered is one of the true joys of travel. And for the encore - laughing at the cheap asses trying to stuff their definitely-not-carry-ons into the already-full overhead.[/QUOTE]

Wow- never have to worry about it myself since I get the carryon- pre boarding and a free checkin. As well as the Club lounge, free drinks.
If I didn't have this, I would be PISSED to pay for a overhead carryon

And BTW- since I get pre boarding- first thing I do after putting my carry-on in MY bin, is put my armrest down. If it makes the person's seat in the middle too tight, not my issue- arm rest stays down lol
LOL you're not getting those perks for free . its part of an expensive credit card you have

Mythbusters took a stab at solving this issue.

Unfortunately the control for their experiment did not take into account the chaos factors involved with the boarding process. They assumed everyone is there ready for boarding at the same time and only first/business class before general boarding. United has 3-4 levels of boarding before economy (various pre-boarding categories, Global, 1K, military, small children, disabilities, 1st Business class, Platinum & Gold elite status, priority boarding status) and those passengers sit in various places and can enter at any time. By the time economy passengers board it is already a mess.

Yea it was a flawed experiment. Their experiment also showed that let everyone on at the same time was the fastest. No priority no status. Move when ready.

It seems that United Airlines is starting a new boarding process whereby passengers with economy window seats board, then passengers with middle seats, than passengers with aisle seats.

I wanted to test the truth of the statement that we, here on the RU Rivals forum, will argue about everything, no matter how trivial. So... yeah. Have at it.

What’s next? Cats sleeping with dogs?

Yeah- went from 450 to 525 last year.
But if you and the wife even fly a couple of times a year- well worth it.
They used to also give you a pretty nice yearly gift but no longer do that. Got a pair of RB Aviator sunglasses one year, a Tumi gym bag another.
The pre boarding alone is almost worth it.

Kind of the Airlines fault.
1) Once they started to charge for checked bags
2) How the F- do you lose bags? And I have notice more than once- your bags may not even be on the same flight as you are. Most likely on flights with stop overs but there have been a few non stop where my bags have been there before me.

They say it will save approx 2 minutes in boarding time, but as long as you have a hundred different categories of various status/memberships that get priority boarding (who will then take up all the overhead space regardless of their seat location), it won’t make much of a difference.

Why don’t board from back to front and designate specific overhead space aligned to your specific seat # (with defined space/measurement criteria) is beyond me. Actually it’s not beyond me…it’s so airlines can charge more baggage fees. But in a world where customer service actually matters, that would be the way to do it.
Exactly
