Flying has really become a hassle compared to what is was pre 9/11.
You're not kidding. One of my all-time favorite experiences simply won't ever happen again for anybody on a commercial flight. In 2000, I was flying back from a couple of months working in Ireland in first class on Aer Lingus (nice work perk for working one's *** off for months at a time leading an API process tech transfer to our manufacturing site there) and had asked a couple of aviation/weather questions to one of the flight attendants I had gotten friendly with over a few flights (not that friendly, lol).
So she said hold on, I'll ask the captain and about 10 minutes later the captain came back and sat in the empty chair next to me and we talked for about 30 minutes about a host of aviation/weather topics, as well as about Ireland, hurling, beer, etc., as he was from Tipperary, which is where our factory is (Clonmel). Was a pretty cool conversation.
Then about an hour later, they announced we were about to start our descent into JFK and the FA came up to me and said the captain wanted to know if I wanted to come up and sit in the jump seat for the landing. Hell yeah! Was so cool to be able to see in all directions and watch the crew communicating with the tower and the crew explained everything they were doing and how it was all basically automated - they just put in the coordinates, speed and direction.
And as we were about 30 seconds from touchdown, the captain had his hand over the throttle and proceeds to turn around for a few seconds and explain how he does that "just in case" he needs to go manual. I was like, great, but you can turn back around and the whole crew chuckled - after we landed the captain said they like to bust the chops of people they let sit in the jump seat for the landing, by turning around right before touchdown. We had a good laugh at that. Can't see this happening again in the post 9/11/2001 world, unfortunately. Thanks bin Laden.
