In agreement DCD!I enjoy listening to Pearl Jam. I agree with pretty much nothing Eddie Vedder says when he has a platform.
That's why Deadpool and Wolverine kicks ***. Ryan Reynolds is looking to buy the Deadpool franchise from Disney. His wit and breaking the fourth wall make Deadpool what it is. You can't change captain America and think after so much content that the new guy is instantly loved. BTW Chris Evans was a ding bat but portrayed the character well. Also the new captain movie probably would've been better served with him as captain in a secondary roll with others to allow the new captain to grab a leader roll. Wolverine will most likely die for me when Hugh Jackman quits taking the roll.Marvel got screwed by Disney demanding content for Disney+, something even Bob Igor has admitted they were wrong about. Half of the shows they’ve made should never have been done and some of the movies too. Also Marvel very rarely has a finished screenplay before they start shooting the movie and they end up piecing it together as they go along or even in post production. Gunn has said that he will always have the screen play written before filming so they get the movie exactly how they want it.
ETA: I think Marvel is suffering from a little fatigue from actual moviegoers. The latest Captain America movie didn’t do well at all in theaters but people are watching the hell out of it on D+ (the movie is pretty mediocre honestly) Thunderbolts I thought was a really good movie but no one went and saw it in the theater.
Can’t you just let a culture warrior be thankful they woke up and found something to be outraged about? ****Just looked it up and the original was Truth and Justice. The American way was added in the late 40s and sporadically used. So light the torches I guess. Kind of like how the Pledge of Allegiance isn't the same as what George Washington.*****
Same. I teared up a little at the end of Remember the Titans. I don't think I could handle this true story.* I just tell people I’ve watched Schindler’s List. I’m not 100% proud of this.
I heard Mike Schur (Office writer, creator of Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99, etc.) on a podcast last week talking about that specific claim about the Office. He said that writers who say "you couldn't make that today" are misunderstanding the material. He talks about how the show presents Michael Scott as ignorant, racist and an unknowing homophobe with a really big heart, because that is what humanizes him and makes his actions in the show humorous. We all know a lovable person who has some crazy personal beliefs.Only on the new SixPack would a post about a superhero movie turn political.
You say Hollywood always made movies with a political slant like this. Tell me, could they make Blazing Saddles today?
See posts 2, 4, and 5 at the start of this thread. It bombed in China.
The funny thing is the article said James Gunn did the press there and said very good things about China and Eastern story telling. He said even though this was his first time in China it felt like home. There was no "Boy, I hear you treat that Muslim population pretty bad"
So it is even more confusing why he got into controversial topics here in the USA.
NERD!! lol I’m right there with you.Yellow ledbetter is more about the tempo than the words*** still like listening to it and mumbling my own verbiage.

Agree with this. The difference is that when Michael says something racist or homophobic, the joke is how insensitive he is, not the thing he said. It's the same reason why Archie Bunker is still funny after 50+ years. We're laughing at him, not with him.I heard Mike Schur (Office writer, creator of Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99, etc.) on a podcast last week talking about that specific claim about the Office. I think they could make Blazing Saddles, because it's withering satire in a funny wrapper. A spaghetti western written by an Ashkenazi Jew about a town of racists who join forces with their black Sheriff to fight a corporation would be pretty modern IMO.
Schur also said, and I agree with this, that "comedians who say 'you can't tell a joke anymore' really mean 'you can't tell a sh*tty joke anymore."
Michael evolved. At first he was closer to the Ricky Gervais version but they knew he had to have redeeming qualities if they wanted a long show run. It turned at office Olympics when they gave him the medalsI heard Mike Schur (Office writer, creator of Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99, etc.) on a podcast last week talking about that specific claim about the Office. I just wished they would have saved Krasinski for this and let someone else cameo in Dr Strange. He is perfect for the role and universallly liked. Cast Emily Blunt as Sue Storm. You know they have chemistryI want to be excited about fantasic four, but something just seems off from the trailers I’ve seen. The sets, vehicles, uniforms, 60’s aesthetic, that all looks great. But in motion, it just feels like it’s going to be blah. I really hope I am wrong
Hold up... You think the people on the RIGHT would be the ones complaining about humor??? Wow.There are a few jokes they would word a little differently in 2025, but nowadays the "77 million Americans" would whine about how "woke" and "alienating" it is. Y'all get that the racists are the butt of the jokes in that movie, right?
It's the same when people say they couldn't get away with making The Office today. Of course they could (South Park and It's Always Sunny push the envelope this decade harder than The Office ever did), but conservatives would complain the loudest about almost every episode.
Next you're going to tell me Archie Bunker wasn't the good guy in All in the Family**It’s a satire on racism? No way**
Great point. That Friends one is a good example of lazy writing. That's not even a joke; there's not a premise, or a setup and punchline.Agree with this. The difference is that when Michael says something racist or homophobic, the joke is how insensitive he is, not the thing he said. It's the same reason why Archie Bunker is still funny after 50+ years. We're laughing at him, not with him.
An example of a joke they wouldn't make in the 2020s is from Friends - Chandler's dad is transgender, and that's the whole joke. They did flesh out the character some more later on, but if people want a go-to example of "you couldn't make this today" (although it is a pretty weak example since Friends was generally progressive on social issues), there's one.
Also, I think the writing improved a lot from Season 1-2, and peaked at about 4-5. I haven't watched it in a while, but my kids both love it. As an aside, I made them watch the BBC version thinking they'd love it, and they couldn't handle the cringe. I think it's perfect. Gervais is disgusting.Michael evolved. At first he was closer to the Ricky Gervais version but they knew he had to have redeeming qualities if they wanted a long show run. It turned at office Olympics when they gave him the medals
Obviously you do.
Probably the part I'm in. The part that laughs at him and at the same time agrees with some of his thoughts, while not agreeing with how he conveys them.Great point. That Friends one is a good example of lazy writing. That's not even a joke; there's not a premise, or a setup and punchline.
That's funny, I forgot about the other interesting moment in that Schur interview. He went on to say that Bunker was such a hit because half of the audience was laughing at how much of a living anachronism he was, and the other half was laughing because they agreed with him. Brilliant show. My grandparents never missed an episode. I wish I could remember what part of the audience they would've been in!
You are applying my comment from one point/idea to a different point/idea, but they are fundamentally different, so doing that doesnt make sense.Obviously you do.
According to glfr he should have gone on Chinese TV and pointed out everything he disagrees with about the Chinese government and the Chinese way of life then asked them to go see his movie.
You were a HARD Disagree on avoiding controversial topics
Ohhh nooooo, not China.****It bombed in China.
The funny thing is the article said James Gunn did the press there and said very good things about China and Eastern story telling. He said even though this was his first time in China it felt like home. There was no "Boy, I hear you treat that Muslim population pretty bad"

And yellow, just like those yellow Oxford sunsabitches.I hate the new Kal-El because he wears Red and Blue like those douches in Oxford!**
I think she's like the other silver surfer's girlfriend or something. In my research, I just now found out she's played by that crazy blonde b*tch Ruth from Ozark. Did not have that on my bingo card. It's been decades since I've picked up a Fantastic 4 or Silver Surfer, so I'm definitely confused on why the latter is a female. Isn't Galactus the antagonist? I hope they do it better than the other attempt. His size fluctuated a lot in old comics though. At times simply 3 or 4 times bigger than Hulk, others bigger than planets.
Don't really care, but "the American Way" part was added during World War II as promotion for the American cause against totalitarian Japan and Germany. Super man sold war bonds and fought cartoon Germans and Japanese. Those my age may remember Superfriends' Superman in the 70s said "Truth, Justice, and peace for all mankind." It's only propaganda when you disagree with the message. Watching movies, reading, listening to music with your political opinions at the ready to be offended as if they are part of your personal being seems really odd and uniquely American to me. It fuels both conservative "pearl clutching" boycotts and leftist "woke cancellation" at the same time. The Superman actor changed "Truth, justice and the American way" to "Truth, justice and the human way". What do y'all think of that?
Gosh you are dense. You are applying my comment from one point/idea to a different point/idea, but they are fundamentally different, so doing that doesnt make sense.
I asked why is half the population choosing to get upset in the first place.
You claimed it doesnt matter why.
You claiming it doesnt matter why is what I disagreed with. If half the population is actually emotionally raging over something so unimportant, then I think it does matter why half the population is choosing to get upset. I think it does matter why half the population makes mountains out of molehills. If everyone understands why half the population is choosing to tweak, then maybe that which is pushing the outrage narrative will be recognized by more people and they will choose to step off the ride instead of handing over yet another ticket to the trashy carny that is running the ride and blaring Wild Side.
I didnt disagree with avoiding controversial topics...I didnt even comment on that. And me saying it matters why half the population chooses to get upset over molehills does not mean I think Gunn should go to China and talk about everything he disagrees with there.
One has nothing to do with the other.
Why would you apply my comment about one point/idea to this totally different point/idea?
First of all in the Global Movie market, China is a HUGE deal.Ohhh nooooo, not China.****
Like… damn Bruce, you’re gonna pull something stretching that far to prove a point. By all accounts, it had a great opening weekend and is going to be one of the biggest movies of the year.
If you don’t want to see it because somebody on Newsmax or Facebook told you to be outraged about (checks notes) kindness and humanity, then that’s your choice, but you’re better than using “China didn’t like it” as proof it pissed people off. C’mon man.
Silver surfer don’t know shít about fúck.I think she's like the other silver surfer's girlfriend or something. In my research, I just now found out she's played by that crazy blonde b*tch Ruth from Ozark. Did not have that on my bingo card.
This is the wayI hate the new Kal-El because he wears Red and Blue like those douches in Oxford!**
Those people are against the what now??“People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”
American Way is a street in Memphis. A very bad street in Memphis. Those people are against the what now??
This is a bit confusing. Is the American Way a good thing (which he's indicating above) or a bad thing (so that it needed to be changed)?
How is this controversial? The USA has become the wealthiest and most influential country in the world because of centuries of immigration. Immigration is why almost all of us are here in this country right now. One of the most iconic monuments in the world is the Statue of Liberty...which is a universal symbol for freedom. The plaque on that Statue is a welcome for immigrants to have a better life here.Third it has nothing to do with what Newsmax or Facebook or Fox News said. He and his brother both decided to make statements concerning the immigration issue that is a major issue not just in the US, but throughout the world. They insinuated that the movie had a message concerning immigrants. Here is his quote from Variety:
“My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about,” he said. “We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”
Correct, they probably shouldnt be upset. No matter which side he came down on, a bunch of people were going to be upset about it. Should they be???? Probably not, but that isn't the current reality of the situation.
You definitely do like to reference this comment.I will point it out once more. When Michael Jordan was asked about why he doesn't make known his view on political issues he said "Republicans buy sneakers too".
FROM LEGAL CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION. You cannot have unlimited immigration. Ask the Indians (Native Americans). How is this controversial? The USA has become the wealthiest and most influential country in the world because of centuries of immigration. Immigration is why almost all of us are here in this country right now. One of the most iconic monuments in the world is the Statue of Liberty...which is a universal symbol for freedom. The plaque on that Statue is a welcome for immigrants to have a better life here.
Immigration is straight up being attacked by many political influencers and people in the current Administration. Not illegal immigration, but immigration in and of itself. There is a very real push against immigration as a concept.
The quote you provided just talks about immigration. Based on how this country has benefitted from immigration, I would hope 98% of people in this country would agree that saying no to immigrants is against the 'American way'. The other 2% can 17 right off.
Correct, they probably shouldnt be upset.
Criticizing someone for saying something that a bunch of people shouldnt be upset about is odd. It seems like that criticism should be directed at the people who you say probably shouldnt be upset.
You definitely do like to reference this comment.
Jordan has said the comment was jokingly made to teammates. And the comment, if actually analyzed, shows Jordan is making his view known. Additionally, Jordan has said he wasnt comfortable weighing in on a campaign/issue he didnt know.
But sure- if you want to view the comment as genuine, then yep- Jordan prioritized shoe sales over supporting a Senate candidate who was trying to replace a proud and fierce Segregationist. Jordan chose to sit on the sidelines and not try to stop his home state from being represented by someone who was straight up racist.
Money over morals, right?
