OT: NJ drivers may soon have to do something they're not used to: pump their own gas.

Just because I don't want my friend, @fsg2 to be proven incorrect, allow me to start the bitching about this.

Top Ten Reasons Why Pumping Our Own Gas Is The Dumbest Thing Ever:

10. We might accidentally blow up the gas station.

9. We could get gas all over our expensive loafers (or, for the ladies, our Manolo Blahnik's).

8. It's, like, freaking cold out. I don't want to leave my heated seat.

7. My car could get dinged by some jerk in the next lane over not paying attention when getting out of his car.

6. I bet they don't even lower the prices for self-serve, the greedy bastards.

5. Thanks, Brandon.

4. How am I gonna keep up with the texting I was doing when I was driving to the gas station?

3. I like turtles.

2. What about the poor gas station attendants who will now be fired, go on unemployment, and cause my taxes to be raised (again)?

and last but not least...

1. We are in a pandemic and having to touch the handles of the pump some germ-riddled virus vector, in the car ahead of us in line, just touched, will cause us to all die.

3-step instructions right on the pump.
We all know older people who still won't understand.

Going to take a while to get used to then it should run better. Personally I'd rather stay in my car and have someone do it for me especially in the winter but at the end of the day not something to complain about. How many gas attendants are there? A decent amount of people going to lose their job but they should be able to find better work elsewhere.

Top Ten Reasons Why Having To Pump Our Own Gas Is a Brilliant Idea:

10. We get to blow up gas stations.

9. We could to show off our expensive loafers (or, for the ladies, our Manolo Blahnik's).

8. Ah, the fresh crisp NJ air in winter. Plus we probably could use more exercise.

7. It gives us license to blast whatever awesome new song track, that's playing in our car at the moment, station-wide, thus alleviating our need to post in the New Songs thread.

6. They'll probably lower the prices for self-serve.

5. Thanks, Brandon.

4. This might interrupt us from texting while we drive long enough to think twice about the wisdom of that particular folly.

3. No, seriously. I really do like turtles dammit! 😡

2. Gas station attendants will be encouraged to find more profitable jobs.

and last but not least...

1. We are in a pandemic and having to touch the handles of the pump some germ-riddled virus vector, in the car ahead of us in line, just touched, will help lead to herd immunity.

Actually #6 is legit. Add to that I like to pay cash for the lower price, and that's been a pain in the *** as some of the self-serve states I've travelled through

Yeah, article said some smaller gas stations have had to close pumps because they couldn't find help. Mandating full service is absolutely silly in that environment.

It saves time and is more efficient.

I guess 16-21 year olds are assuming RU is going to provide enough financial aid that they won't have to work

It wasn't remotely funny the first time you posted it.

I hate cash, and especially hate coins. So I love the convenience of credit cards.

Ironically, when I filled up a couple hours ago, when I stopped at my usual station, the attendant was nowhere to be seen for a couple minutes (I was the only person there). So I left and went to another station. If there was self-serve, it wouldn't have been a problem.

You ever watch Letterman? The top ten lists were only funny around twice per month. So I'd in good company.

But feel free to produce a funnier set of top ten lists, if you think you can.
Thanks, I'll pass since no one finds that garbage funny.

I love New Jersey, probably as much or more as most natives. But full-serve only gas is the one thing I hate about it...

I haven't owned a car in 11 years. I wouldn't know what to do at a self-serve or full-serve gas station.

Hint: If you order nice round numbers, like $20. or $30 or soon $60. you don't end up with coins.
I just stopped taking back the coins, like 20 years ago. It weirds some folks working registers out. Might even offend some.

But I hate coins. Wish they'd just eliminate coins altogether. Put an end to the whole $X.99 marketing "ploy" once and for all.

And with sales tax it comes to $1.06, and you get 94 cents (including four pennies) back

Being a fairly impatient person, I'm pretty sure I'll prefer self-serve, except when it's really hot or cold - I like not having to wait when I'm out of state. Don't forget to ground yourself after getting out of the car to fill up, though, to prevent static electricity-induced fires...

When this was last proposed a few years ago, all hell broke loose. New Jerseyans considered themselves entitled to full-serve. But I got gas today and it seemed to take forever for the attendant to come over to start the fill and end it, and it sounds like I'm not the only person who is getting tired of that.

I personally love full serve. And I spent my first 45 years living in NY where it is self serve,
Main reason for me to like Full Serve is that it is the time I can check my email or return a text.
Cash- as much time as you may save by pumping it yourself- it kills more time to have to run inside, wait on line and pre pay with cash. And there are times you want to top off your tank and you have no idea how much that is going to take.
Getting out of the car in the real hot or cold.
And some jerkoff will have that pump handle covered in gas and you just arent getting that off your hand quickly.

The guy probably saw it was you and decided to make you wait

guess this is bound to happen
The days of HS students playing gas jockey for pay isn't the same as it was back in the day
when I pumped gas, checked the oil and tires for gas money.

I'd normally completely agree about that, and it would be perfectly understandable. Even I make myself wait for all kinds of stuff 'cause I'm such a douchebag. 🙂

However, in this case, I've become buddies w/the guy who works the pumps at this place. We've had some great conversations over the years.

While sniffing gas fumes (yum). 😀
