Update: Headed to Nashville the first week of July. Sent my resume to a temp-to-perm agency. Sometimes you have to live on a prayer, and I've had a lot of support in the category of "go somewhere on a whim and 17 it" so I chose between Nashville and Spokane, WA. I might revisit going to Spokane eventually because you can rent a mansion there next to a river known for world class fly fishing for like $500/mo.

Friend graduates tomorrow and has loosely agreed to split an apartment with me, so does anyone know of a cheaper 2 bedroom place near downtown?

ETA: Some of you REALLY hate Jackson, and from the sounds of it the ones who hate it the most actually still live there. I put that with the advise that if I move there I'll never leave, it really changed my mind.

So thanks? I'll pray for you.

If you want cheap, avoid downtown. Look around Bellevue or maybe become an East Nashville hipster.

I don't have to live in downtown, if anything I'll move there in a couple years (gotta start somewhere) but I would really like to be somewhere where I can at least walk to a bar or something. Is that East Nashville? Admittedly I've never spent much time in Nashville, and when I have it was very touristy.

East Nashville (depending on exactly where you are) has a ton of places for eating, drinking, and being merry within walking distance. It really is the Nashville hipster scene (plus a lot of other young adults).

12 South has a similar vibe. That would be worth a look.

Near downtown 2 BR apartments START at $1600. The only exception I know of is "Capital Towers". It is north downtown, but an easy walk to everything. I think 2 BR there are $900. It is a dump (you get what you pay for) but safe.

GREAT decision. nashville is my target city once school finishes. As a jackson native, i love to hate it. its way better than most places in the state i can think of, but out of state alternatives blow it out of the water.

also, from personal experience, i suggest getting a local (nashville) PO box while you settle in and use that as your resume's local mailing address. it gives the appearance that you have some roots set in the city and may be of some benefit as your resume competes with others that may not have such a tie.

I've been using my girlfriend's address (let's put the cards on the table boys, that's what it came down to).

I learned that trick a while back. It's funny, because my friend used my address up here to land a job with Lost Letterman while he was still in Mississippi.

I never considered Jackson once until recently, especially being from the coast. Just my blood boiled over for a second. I had a long conversation with me madre and she reminded me that my sister (went to Davidson and graduated with a really, really superior resume to mine) took a year to get a job and ended up doing well for herself. Took some of the edge off. It's nerve racking, this whole graduate high school, go to college before you know what you want to do, graduate and go out in the world thing.

Mississippi State's career center is really great, I will say. But it doesn't do too much for people trying to get out of Mississippi, which is to be expected from a Mississippi institution I guess. But the one interview I landed from them, the people thought I was "above" the position and thought I'd leave after my training period. Valid point, because I would have, but Mississippi needs to do something about it's % of residents above 25 with college degrees. We graduate the same %, they just leave. I'm a prime example.

Concur w others' suggestions

East Nasty is going to be the cheapest live/drink situation. 12 South is another great option. There may be some cheap options over that way. That would be the best investment. Germantown is my third suggestion. There's a lot happening there too. East Nasty may remind you of a cooler safer Jackson. "Safer" being relative. There's gun shots and break-ins often which gives it's inhabitants an attitude.

Check out 12 South first. Don't move to the burbs until you have kids!!!

Yeah, Jackson is hard to defend when you compare it to other places. It's a city that has a hard time trying to get out of it's own way. Crime is absolutely horrible for a town of 175k, and I don't see that ever improving. I saw the long term downtown plans on the news recently, and keep wondering why it took people here so long to think about a revitalization plan. Other comparable towns began their new urbanization, and downtown revitalization efforts about 20 years ago. Makes you question what city planners were doing back then..

Race bogs down everything in Jackson, It was almost 10 years ago when I first heard Ben Allen talk about two waying Capitol St (although I don't think it will help). At that time, Ben said the project would take forever to just get started because the race mongers would complain it was racist.

With Kenuff and LaRita in charge, no worries!
