I've heard that if you do a heavy cardio workout 5-6 times a week, you need to make sure to eat enough to where your net calorie intake is at least 1,200. Meaning you should eat at least 2,000 calories if you are burning 800 in cardio, or your body will go into starvation mode and burn muscle instead of fat. Any truth to that?<div>
</div><div>Because my wife is killing me asking why she can't drop 2 pounds, and I'm sick of hearing about it. Nothing would give me more pleasure than telling her to just eat more and she'll lose the weight.</div>

For a female trying to lose weight, 2000 calories is a little high.

Not accusing your wife of this but with 95% of people that say they are eating 1200 calories a day, they are usually eating more than that.

It still comes down to what you take in and what you burn.

If she is down to a pretty fit weight and trying to lose the last 2 pounds then it is probably a case of what kind of calories she is putting in. When you get pretty lean and want to lose the last few pounds, where your calories are coming from can have a big impact on you losing the weight.

That is at least my experience with it.

1) ignore calorie readings on cardio machines. It is meaningless. Also insignificant compared to calories burnt during recovery which is based on many things that machine knows nothing about.

2) in general, you want to run a slight caloric deficit.

3) most people run a huge caloric deficit which works for a while and plateaus. The metabo only gives a **** about keeping a person alive. You can't fight it with brute force. In a plateau, eat a little more and watch weight loss continue. Trust me. I'm not FlabLoser for nuthin.

4) don't do the same damn cardio machine all the time. The body gets efficient and burns fewer calories. Mix in some paced weight lifting. And some HIIT. Especially some HIIT...and no not with the same damn machine all the time.

People want to go out there and do a 30 min jog on a treadmill and wonder why they can't lose weight. You could spend 10 minutes doing sprints and get better results. Tabata training (20 sec all out, 10 sec rest) is something good to mix up your workouts. If done right, about 15 minutes is all you can handle.

She needs to eat most of her cals earlier in the day. I know its very cliche, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

And I third the HIIT

She's all about HIIT. That's my concern -- doesn't she need to eat a certain amount calories if she's burning that many to keep her body out of starvation mode. So the body burns fat instead of muscle. Thanks all for previous responses.

But it's pretty much a myth. http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-truth-myth-eating-night-causes-weight-gain <div>
</div><div>Breakfast is important for energy to get moving. Eating a few hours before bed will allow time to process the food, but food selection & quantity are the most important aspects to caloric intake and diet. Also, I will add to the HIIT supporters. </div>

As a 55 year old woman, I can attest to the fact that age has some effect on weight loss strategies. I work out 3 times a week, with a trainer, sweat my arse off, pump iron, switch aerobics around, eat 1200 calories a day (I keep a log) and have been since Jan 6, and have not lost one pound. I have changed body shape, for the better, but I really wanted to lose 10 pounds.<div>
</div><div>Also, alcohol consumption absolutely stalls weight loss.....any kind of alcohol......it just does.</div>
