Great series win!! McLean super impressive after he couldn't locate right away. Offense keeps rolling. Hoping for the sweep tomorrow!!!

McLean first SP to go 4-0 on first 4 starts in 11 years I think the booth said.

Meh performance for Megill tonight. Scoreless through four, but they got him in the fifth. Three runs without retiring a batter, although two of those runs were conceded by his successor.

Golden Sombrero for Siri.

A super bright spot currently - I think most of us are worried if Alvarez is not able to come back for the playoffs or that he is not even close to 100%. And we had felt that it would be such a hole in the lineup at C...Torrens has now taken that worry away as he is showing he can actually hit when needed. Is he signed for next year? If so, Alvarez/Torrens is not a bad combo.

The best Stearn's move during the Trade deadline- not trading away Baty or Vientos.

Speaking of Stearns- the shine is really coming off his smirk(which annoys me) - has he really made any significant positive moves? Rogers has been good butto has been good for the Giants as well. The rest of the moves this year blah...last year- Maton was good and Winker had some big moments.
The pitching lab? All I see is teaching pitchers not to throw the ball over the plate.
Soto signing- it wasn't like that took a boy genius. And he took a real chance of losing Alonso and where would we be this year if we didn't have him? Same goes for this upcoming off-season the fans will be in the seats if we have Lindor/Soto/Alonso - I am not so sure if it is just Lindor/Soto and hope to fill the stadium only when McLean or Tong are pitching

He also needs to just lock in Diaz...everyone loved bringing in Hensley and how it made Diaz expendable- When you have a "Diaz" you make sure you keep him.

My thoughts:

1) Torrens has one more ARB year. He becomes a free agent in 2027. He is hot right now which is good. He can get cold again as we know. But that is true of anyone.

2) Butto was out of options and was unlikely to be a Met in 2026 anyway.

3) Met pitching philosophy seems to be: pitch guys tough, don't be afraid to walk people, the overriding objective is to keep the ball in the park. The stats bear that out. Worked superbly for the first one-third of the season, since then, not so much. Will the pitchers turn around in time for a magical finish? Maybe. All I know is that the philosophy isn't changing now.

4) We all agree that going into this year, Soto was Plan A. Done. Having signed Soto, would Cohen have been willing to go long on Alonso if necessary? Had he missed on Soto, would he have pivoted to Alonso? No way to know. We do know that the way it played out, we have both Soto and Alonso. Prior to the season, that seemed unlikely at best. So I think we should give some credit where it is due.

5) I don't think keeping Diaz will be difficult, as I don't think that the market for him will be all that strong. We shall see.

With Torrens- My take was that we were all afraid that if we were in the playoffs without Alvarez, C was an auto out. I don't think we expected that Torrens could even do what he has done for the past couple of weeks. He can easily go back into a hitting funk- but, at least we know he does have it in him. I don't think he could be a year long starter but he is showing he could be a super backup.

Pitching- as you know, I have been saying that for 2 years. They are pitching to get weak contact and get hitters to chase balls out of the zone. I think that can work for a time with starters but our relievers are doing the same thing when we sometimes just need no nonsense heat for strikes. It is also a big reason we barely ever get 5 innings.

The move with Alonso after signing Soto- yes, it worked out in the end and maybe we saved a couple of $$$. I just don't want to see him play that game again. And it feels more like a Cohen move than Stearns.

Diaz- agree that the market is never great for closers- but like Alonso- Diaz really seems to love being a Met. Those are things that analytics don't pick up but it is huge in a game like baseball with such a long season.

My musts for 2026 (Soto/Lindor/Nimmo) are locked up and not going anywhere. 100% need to sign Alonso and Diaz. If we are able to move a McNeil, I am ok with that but also ok with him coming back. It also feels like both Baty and Vientos are showing they both will have solid careers. Do we try to do a Brave's move and lock them in early?
If we look to make a big move for a FA not currently on the roster- need to make it an OF. I don't know if there is an ACE pitcher available- so, not sure what Stearns does here. Senga/Manaea/Peterson are locks- McLean looks real. Need to see Tong a couple more times. I would allow Holmes the start of the season as a starter but if he isn't strong enough for 140-160 innings, put him into the bullpen. I feel Manaea will be better next year- it feels like both he and Senga are not fully healthy.

I don't even know where to begin on the comments this morning but to say Stearns is bothering is you is quite the take. We're having back to back years of success that as a franchise we generally don't see and it's his first two years here. You also list all these moves you like but then try and diminish them by giving caveats for each. That's not how you judge success. They're here or they're not it doesn't matter how it ended up. I'm not going to go point by point but Stearns has an adaptive philosophy. He's not going to be stringent on certain things. Yeah he doesn't like to pay a lot of money for older pitchers while our farm was going to begin to pop them out as we're seeing now. Any of the major FA SP signs would not look all that great right now with all the injuries they've had.

The development of the younger players and the farm system is also on the positive side of the GM ledger and perhaps the most important. As you correctly pointed out it's sometimes the moves you don't make that help the team and Baty is looking good and Vientos finally hitting again like we thought he would.

Third it's way too early to think about the off-season. Let's enjoy September and October baseball and see where this teams lands before judging what is or isn't needed.

The second wild card spot is very much in play now. Only 1 game behind as the Padres are struggling with the O's in a home series. And they make a trip to Citi on the next homestand, which i believe I heard Cohen say is the final one of the season.

Mitch Voit with a monster game good to see. Santucci has been amazing after a poor first month. The next wave of pitching prospects like him, Watson, Wenninger, Gordon, Girton, Thornton look to be really solid. Watson the highest upside in that group but should help us at various points next year if needed. The pitching development this season is unlike nothing I've seen in the farm before. Obviously they're not going to all hit but to have a streamline of serviceable starters at minimum and trade bait is a huge strength for the franchise.

He's a career .229 hitter with a .646 OPS. Enjoy his hot streak. He's not a good or even average hitter.

I give that the minors have blossomed.

And outside of Fried, Eovaldi, Boyd - have to admit that most of the bigger name pitchers have not been good. But in reality, did he bid against himself for Montas?

Soto - He got him but for more money than everyone else and I am not 100% sure he wanted to do it. And yes, we did get Alonso but sometimes I get a little bit of an "Ash" feel where he doesn't understand that the NY Met fan really wants a home grown hero to give an entire HOF career for us to call our own. And even if we over pay him a bit- by doing so, we are not harming anyone or blocking anyone from developing.

And sorry if his smirk annoys the crap out of me, but it does. lol

Montas yeah that was bad but turns out maybe he was injured also and why he looked as bad as he did? Stearns isn't perfect but no GM is. Overall in his two years here there have been more correct decisions than incorrect.

Stearns grew up a huge Mets fans so he certainly does get it. It was smart of him to let Alonso see what the market thought of himself last year knowing he would always come back to the Mets to get a deal. Why should we overpay if we don't have to? After the opt out this year it might happen again so buckle up.

Didn’t think it was feasible, but this guy officially is getting slotted above Ruf in the disaster trade list. At least Ruf’s abyss was fully anticipated (by moi).

Tyler Naquin as well. Hector Rodriguez, one of the prospects we traded for him is basically a top 100 guy at this point and in AAA. He's put up some great numbers in the minors this year.
