As a fan, I’d much rather not even make the playoffs than suffer heart ache year in and year out being so close.

It’s all about winning the cup.
This is such a loser mentality. So youd rather your season end at the trade deadline than June.

As a jets fan, id kill to have them as successful as the rangers. Itd still be frustrating seeing them not win a super bowl but 5 afc championship trips and one super bowl appearance since 2012, id kill for that.

As this relates to the SCF (or any championship game/series of a sport), I actually agree. The disappointment casts a pall over the whole year and no matter what, there is the memory of knowing how it ends.

Add in your team is always shown as the loser of said matchup in whatever record book/list and it serves as a reminder when seeing it.

That said, losing in a semifinal doesn’t have the same effect.

I guess since us devils fans experienced a lot of actusl
Success in our lifetime..I feel different.

Maybe I’d feel different if I didn’t see the devils in 5 cups in my lifetime..hence how you feel with the jets.

I’ve been very fortunate to see my favorite teams (devils Yankees giants) each in multiple championships. So I guess that effects my mentality and is different than say that of a (rangers jets mets fan)..I can see why they’d be happy to get close..much less success

I say this as a Yankee/Giants fan, you must have had a very depressing last decade with that attitude

Not sure if there's a general playoff thread, but I hope people saw McDavid's filthy goal a little while ago - one of the best goals I've ever seen. And then he had a gorgeous assist on a 2nd goal (both on the power play). 2-0 Edmonton.

Haha the devs havent won a cup going on 22 years next season. They had a great 10 year run.

We’ll get to 2040 and fans will still point to that. Just as islanders fans pretend theyre the best because of what they did 45 years ago.

22 years is nothing compared to much of the league..

Means nothing if you don’t win the playoffs though.
I will never understand this philosophy, especially by a Rutgers fan. We know we have slightly above zero chance of winning a CFB championship, but most of us are pretty happy if the team wins more than it loses and goes to bowls regularly and doesn't get blown out by the big boys.

I think it all depends on experience. A 20 year old using the islanders early 80s success…yah probably not ideal since they didn’t experience it, but a 60 year old..sure. Have at it. They experienced it

If you see my above post..this philosophy doesn’t apply to Rutgers. I’ve never seen success from them so yes, I’d be happy being “close”.

My teams I’ve seen success from..and lots of success for that matter..coming close means nothing. I have higher expectations from them

How old are you? Devs fans 30 and younger barely remember any success. They were 10 years old and in 3rd/4th grade for their most recent cup

almost 40. Remember all their runs very clearly
Im skeptical about 10 year old you vividly remembering their fugazzi lockout cup in 1995.

Crazy thing is, if youre 40 now, youre old enough to have kids, have kids nearing college and last cup you saw was when you were either a senior in high school or early in college. Been a while. And yes, while rangers have been longer since their last cup, devils fans often forget its going on 22 years heading into next season.

Certainly been a while. Not disagreeing at all. But again, compared to other fan bases..22 years isn’t a long time, it’s extremely tough to win a cup.

Lets be real. The devils would kill to be in the rangers shoes for the past decade.

I mean neither team has won this past decade..so I’d say there’s other teams devils would kill to be.

Rangers would kill to be in the devils shoes the two decades prior, agree ?

Of course. You prefer to root for teams who win more. Rangers had some dark years in the 2000’s.

Agree. Devils haave had some dark years recently. I’d prefer them to be in the penguins, kings, bkackhawks, lightning shoes this past decade..teams that have actually won more.

What Ranger fans need to understand is that to the owner, the past three years have been a hugely successful run. Dolan doesn’t give one **** about hockey, so he is ecstatic they averaged 6 home playoff games in the last three years.

There will never be the pressure on the people running the Rangers to actually win the Cup that there is at other franchises, the pressure is to consistently make a couple playoff rounds and earn him a lot of money.

That’s why the rebuild was short circuited and why they won’t make major changes to this team now.
Stop trying to make sense in the cesspool that this thread devolved into and just wallow in the **** like everyone else.

You suggested you don’t want your team to make the playoffs unless you know they are going to win the cup… which means you don’t want them to make the playoffs hahaha… bc statistically, teams don’t win the cup.

Nah. Dolan cares about winning and is a big hockey fan. Alot of the above is flat out wrong.

Rangers are one of the best run franchises in hockey. What franchise can do essentially a 3 year rebuild and be right back to conference championship games? The answer is very few.

Agree..and frankly I don’t think there’s much trolling going on. Pretty good discussion about teams, expectations, etc

Discussion? Lol. Yeah, a bunch of yahoos calling each’s teams names is a great mind bending discussion. Have at it buddy.

Or, just ignore my post. Not hard.

Shifting gears to the other series. Dallas absolutely dominating game 6 in terms of shots, puck possession, forechecking, etc. But Edmonton up 2-0. Oilers only have 8 shots on goal through almost 2.5 periods. But they are 2-2 on the PP and have killed off all 3 penalties against them. They’ve successfully killed 23 straight PKs.

This series has actually been very similar to the Rangers/Panthers series, except the Oilers are winning the special teams battle. Incredible they’re doing this with Stuart freaking Skinner in goal.
