Looking to get a new off shore reel and wanted some opinions. I have a penn senator and I've used a shimano tld when I don't bring mine. We fish from 80-100 ft of water out of pascagoula. I'm thinking about the Calcutta ct400 but wanted some opinions before making a decision. I've got a st croix triumph rod I'm going to put it on but any rod advice is welcomed.

any particular targeted species ? ...... general purpose- the Senator will fill the bill on most ... if you are thinking tuna or blue Marlin then you will need more line capacity ... my personal favorite for Tuna and down is the Penn International svs in 30 wide ... targeting marlin you would need a 50 wide (preferably) .... either way, I would stick with Penn or Shimano ... Flueger makes a good reel but for smaller species generally

ETA- if you are launching out of Pascagoula then the senator should be fine ... 80 miles from there before you stand a chance for marlin

We go for grouper, snapper, cobia, kings. I really like my senator, I've had it for 3 years now. I don't go out deep nearly as much as I do inshore so I'm not wanting to spend a ton. Do you know much about the Calcutta?

yeah ... I always have to buy back half of my team in our member-guest calcutta ...couldn't resist ... never used and haven't heard much ... I usually launch out of Mary Walker marina myself so I'm familiar with your typical day on the water given the area ... however, the triple rig is within easy running distance and you never know ... we hooked into an eighty pound wahoo there one day and almost got spooled before we could catch up to him ... I'm just a big proponent of line capacity even though you might not need it most of the time

We were going to run out to the triple rig last Saturday and the lowrance decided that that was the day it would stop working so we just hung around horn for most of the day. Never caught anything too exotic out that way, I guess a 5ft mako probably being the only thing that's not that common out there.

Do you have a giant Salt Life sticker & a smaller Yeti sticker on your Tahoe? If not, you don't know what the hell you're doing.
