I've never played the courses at the Naval Air Station, but an avid golfer friend of mine has played there several times and he says the courses are outstanding.
I played yesterday at a course on Redstone Arsenal (they have two), and while they are really nice course layouts, they don't take care of them. The fairway grass was a full two inches high, and the rough was about four. I thought it might be because of reduced funding because of sequestration, but thinking about it they've always been that way. From my friend's recommendation, I can only assume that they take care of the courses there and actually mow the fairways more than once every two weeks. Also ... Redstone's greens on the 9 I played on were very, very grainy and bumpy and looked like they hadn't been mowed in a couple of days (the greens are Bermuda, and Bent Grass grows just fine here ... I suppose they were looking for low maintenance). And of the 4 nines at Redstone, there are 4 different types of greens grass. So take it for what it's worth ... Pensacola NAS may be just fine, as I've been told, in contrast to Redstone.
