to someone who is buying a first gun is this. consider the magazine size. my springfield 45 carries a 13 rd clip so when it is loaded it is heavy. many folks don't compare the weight loaded vs empty but you should cause its significantly different. my point is, especially if you are ever going to carry it for protection, i'd consider a smaller weapon with maybe an 8 rd clip. maybe a 380 or 40 cal. with hollow points they will certainly do the trick and frankly if you get in a dicy situation 8 shots is probably enough. by the time you get of 3 or 4 its likely going to be over. these tv gun battles are not real.

i've a double row Para 12.45 that holds 12 in the mag... the weight helps manage recoil and you can pistol whip the hell outta somebody should you feel the need... it's really compact but HEEEEEAVY...

Agreed, I have a Glock .40cal Model 22. It has a 15 rd clip and that sumbitch is heavy. I prefer to "carry" my hammerless .38, plus I can put it in my pocket and it won't snag when I'm pulling it out.
easy there, cat... the guts inside that weapon are as clean as an endzone defended by Bama's defense... mostly oily fingerprints and seech.
I love tha Para LDA's. that trigger is the best DA trigger in my opinion. I have 2 , the carry 45acp and the carry 9mm with the alloy lower. Hands down my favorite carry guns. They won't out shoot my Les Baer but I just don't feel comfortable carrying cocked ad locked in most situations.
If you are wanting a pistol for self defense I would stay away from the .380's. Not to say it will not work but it doesn't have the stopping power like a .40 or .45. If you have a big man or several threats, you want to make sure you stop them in their tracks. A .380 or even a 9mm in some cases just don't have the stopping power.
Now all this depends on where you put the lead, in the head or center mass. Most of the time you will be going for the center mass, thus with a big gorilla a .380 or sometimes a 9mm will not knock him down. A friend of mine was killed with a .380....but it took a head shot after the guy put about 6 too his body, my friend was a big guy. This is what the shooter said in court and evidence showed.
My preference for self defense with no doubt is a .40 cal or .45. The .40 is somewhat lighter than the .45 so that is a positive. Also I can shoot the .40 more accurately.
My avatar is a pic of a target I shot with a S&W MP .40 @ 10 yards. But like I said, most of the time you will be going for center mass since a moving man is hard to hit in the head!!!

especially if the perp is jacked up on drugs. 9mm is absolutely the smallest caliber you should go in a self defense handgun. The smaller calibers are even more prone to jam and are often just flat out unsafe.

ditto this... best handgun trigger i've ever felt... i also like the fact my LDA has no "external" hammer thingy to snag on stuff...
