They basically said anyone, anywhere can use any of their technology and they will not file a patent lawsuit against them assuming good faith. Said they're doing it to promote electric cars.

They just gave their entire Company away from public consumption.

All Our Patents Belong To You

Elon Musk is a hell of an interesting individual.

Could have gone off and bought an island after Paypal, but poured $100 mil into SpaceX. Saw an interview with where he said never thought Tesla was going to be profitable but he did it anyway because the planet is going to need that technology one day.

Pretty cool. Of course, this will have an upside for Tesla too. Their biggest obstacle is the lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles nationwide (charging stations). By opening up their patents, they allow other companies to build electric cars using their model, which will drive up demand for the charging stations. Also, the "good faith" requirement still leaves them the opportunity to sue someone. Still, very cool move by them. I'm a big fan and would love to own one.

The Model S is becoming fairly common here (I work a few miles away from Spacex) and I'm jealous every time I see one. Can't wait for them to hopefully develop lower cost models in the future.

I had no idea they were that expensive.

It's still a pipe dream for most people at that price point.

& Not to mention that

It will open the door for other elc. car companies to buy quality batteries.

Since Tesla/Musk is about to build a new high tech battery factory...

more demand for his product.

Top of the line models are between $85-95K. No amount of gas savings will help me afford that. But for people who would normally buy BMWs or Mercedes in that price range it's a good deal. They actually perform just as well if not better.

Depends. You can get one for $70K. But you're going to want to go at least to $80K for the larger battery pack, then add options and you're at about $90K - $95K for the one I want. You do get a $7,500 tax credit for buying one.

I see at least a half-dozen around East Memphis/Germantown/Collierville on a pretty regular basis. pretty bad-*** looking cars if you're into cars.

Now if he really want to make a statement he needs to put that battery

factory in the Golden Triangle, we need it.

I rode in the sports model a year or so ago. It was something else. I've never experienced silence acceleration like that. Plus it seemed to really hug the road at a high speed (100-110 mph on a somewhat curvy country road). I think that is due to the main power plant being centered in the car. Was a ***** for an old guy like me to get in and out of.

Fun experience.

I want one.

This move by Tesla today will hopefully pave the way for a more affordable vehicle. If I had the means I'd buy one.

It was the quickest acceleration I've ever experienced.

I got to ride in a famous neighbor's after delivery. It was like a rocket propelled golf cart with all that quiet speed. They're all over Nashville. Just not in my driveway.
