I'm looking at purchasing a tablet and the first thing I looked at was the iPad. Since I have been looking I have noticed there are other products that provide the same specs that I am interested in.. (7"-10" screen, provides 16 GB of memory or ability to hold SD cards instead, USB ports, Wifi capabilities, and no 3G, prefer with a camera but not a must) and I can get for a much better price. I am not someone who is concerned with the brand; I am looking for a tablet that packs the functionality in for a reasonable price. From anyone with purchasing experience or knows a thing or two what would you recommend for me to buy?

If you want real touch screen ability go for the bigger screen. Sometimes little tags etc... are hard to click with your finger. Mine is not 3G but I have a WiFi hub at home. I was given mine as a gift so I never comparison shopped or anything, but I am totally addicted to it. By far the coolest gadget I've ever had. My internet usage has gone way way up, nothing better than surfing the web on the can.

I'll let you check out the specs on your own, but it is around the $300 price point which I think is reasonable. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is a great device but very expensive.

It might be in your best interest to wait 2-3 months. Android Honeycomb tablets should hit the market in March and April.

Most of the tablets go up in price if you have 3G capabilities but I do not want any interaction with the cellular internet services. Wifi is adequate

but it is the most expensive and I am confused as to whether I have to get a data plan or not for it from T-Mobile, etc. Any information on that? And thanks I will look at the Archos 101 and the Honeycomb

I won one at a holiday party and it has easily overtaken my laptop for convenience.

the screen is excellent, the speakers are surprisingly really good even when turned up, it loads quickly, and the best part is that it lasts for 15 or so hours before needing to charge. The battery is friggin great.
It is the larger memory size, not sure if i would have paid for more memory if i bought it, but if you have a lot of pics vids and music it would be necessary.

The price is insultingly high though. I wouldnt have paid more than $250 for something like that, i guess i am cheap but for $600 it isnt worthwhile to me.

Drawbacks are:
--no flash player capability without some serious reconfiguring, which i have no interest in learning.
--DO NOT GET A SCREEN COVER THAT TINTS!! I spent $35 on one and it works great in terms of the touch functionality, but it makes the screen pixelate into 8 different colors...it is terrible.

Get a condom or one of those folders for it, the thing is crazy slick and would slide off **** without something wrapped onto the back of it.

iPad2 is rumored to be released in April/May timeframe.<div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">
</span></div><div>I got the iPad for Christmas. It's the 32GB 3G version. I use it almost exclusively for at-home computing now. The thing is great.</div><div><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre">
</span></div><div>+1 to the poster below who mentioned a case. I tried toting it around for about 2 weeks without a case and there's no way I would recommend that to anyone.<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"> </span>

it's a slick as a piece of 1/4'' glass and polished aluminum otherwise. That brings up one of the drawbacks to the Ipad. As much as I love it the whole after market essentials start to add up real quick:

Case 30$, SD card reader 35$, Keyboard 50$'s etc... It was free to me so it's not as big a deal but could add up real quick.

but the zenithink epad sounds kinda like what you want. I'll been looking at them for a few months now, all the specs without the apple name.

If you purchase through a mobile carrier they will probably make you sign a contract for the dataplan. By contrast the Archos does not support 3G and is wifi only but will allow you to tether to your phone.

Now is not a good time to buy.. Ipad2 will be coming out soon along with the Motorola Xoom which was voted best in show at CES 2011 (Consumer Electronic Show) which is a prestigious award to win especially this year when all the main focus was on tablets.

last year was sort of the entry year for tablets, this year there will be a lot more feature rich tablets along with more choices

Love the iPad, but you might want to wait for the 2nd generation which is coming out soon. Of course, you can buy one and easily resale it on Ebay for about 80% of what you paid. That's what I did as I wait for iPad 2.<div>

Drawbacks with Ipad

No Flash
No USB
No VoIP
No screen guard
No Web cam
No SD slot

Go a cheaper route or just buy a netbook until Apple gets it right with version 3 or 4, number 2 won't have everything, they never do...
Just look at how the Ipod or Iphone has evolved over the first version.

I agree with Fish....I'd wait if you decide on the IPAD.

I have the higher-end IPAD. Not good for much other than surfing and games in my opinion. Don't get me wrong...it's a really handy gadget and I love it. I am most impressed with the boot-up. There is none....you turn it on and it's up! The one thing that needs much improvement is the screen glare. I understand the next generation will include most of what everyone else has mentioned.

I did not purchase the 3G option. Most everywhere I use mine has wi-fi.....home, work, etc. I recently attended a meeting and was pumped about taking my gadget without wagging my heavy laptop only to realize the hotel connection was hard-wired so basically I was screwed.

Internal Best Buy documents apparently leaked to Engadget
seem to indicate that the Xoom will be available on February 17th with a
price tag of $700. The tablet will feature a 3G connection compatible
with Verizon, which will be upgradeable to take advantage of Verizon's
new 4G network as well.</p>

Android fan site Droid Life has put together a handy chart comparing the Xoom to Apple's 3G-equipped iPad.</p>

</p>

You'll notice that the Xoom beats out the 32 gigabyte 3G-equipped
iPad in just about every hardware category while undercutting its price
tag by $30. I'll add that the two tablets weigh the exact same at 1.6
pounds, according to Motorola's own specs. The Xoom will feature 32 gigabytes of on-board memory that can be expanded via memory cards as well.</p><div style="overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; border: medium none;">

$189, 7" screen, only 13.7 ounces. 8Mb on board+16Mb card slot. Has Android 2.1 and Android Marketplace--this Archos 7 "Eclair" is an updated version of the Archos 7 that came out last year. Going to use it mostly for net surfing, email, etc. Has a "resistive" screen which is not as sensitive as the capacitive screen of the iPad/iPhone. But reviews say the new Archos 7 has one of the best resistive screens anywhere.

I think a 7" screen will better fit my portability needs and will be smaller/lighter/easier to hold. This Archos 7 is one of the lightest out there.

And it's only $189. Not quite as good as an iPad, but a lot cheaper.

I had to jailbreak the phone to make it a wifi hotspot, but that took about four minutes.

Ipad is the best thing for travelling. In airports and on planes I watch movies, read books, or surf the net on this tiny little thing. It's awesome.
