....I bought my mom a new storebought PC today. The video connectors on the back are both DVI-D, it looks like. Her existing monitor is VGA-only.

There's no way to make this work, is there?

Trying to confirm my own research.

My understanding is that those adapters are for converting a VGA output to a DVI-D input, not vice-versa, which you don't pick up from the descriptions, but it's why they have crappy reviews, because people don't know.

What I'm reading is DVI-D is a digital output, and VGA is purely analog, and apparently never the twain shall meet.

The DVI-to-VGA adapters I can find don't fit because it's a DVI-D, not DVI-I.

Of course, to max out the video you need a DVI-D or HDMI monitor. DVI-D does not carry sound, prolly not an issue yet HDMI does. You might consider investing (like a good son) a nice HDMI monitor and use a DVI-HDMI coupler (prolly female to female).

....went back to the store and bought a different PC that had a VGA port on the back as well as an HDMI port. Similar price/configuration.

I'm still honestly shocked that computer manufacturers (HP, in this example) are selling desktops now that don't even support VGA, when probably 90% or greater of the monitors in the world still have a VGA port.

But anyway, problem solved.
