Been alternating between moderate and heavy snow for most of the last 45 minutes. As of 1:45 pm, we have 1" of new snow on the ground here in Metuchen, at 24F (with about 1/2" in the last 30 minutes; started here around noon). Much better dendrites than expected and I'd guesstimate a 12-15:1 ratio by eyeball.Originally posted by RU848789:
Light snow started here around 11:55 am and it quickly went to moderate snow 10 minutes later - light coating on the ground. If temps were more borderline (it's 26F now) and if it hadn't been so cold before the precip started, I'd be more worried about the early March sun angle at midday - I think it will only be a minor factor. Sleet already mixing in in far South Jersey over to NE MD. Would much prefer 5" of snow to 2" of snow and 0.3" of freezing rain - the latter is looking more likely south of 78 and certainly from Lambertville to South Amboy and SE of that line (could stay snow a fair amount longer close to 78).
I wrote a long post on AmericanWx on why sleet/freezing rain are so hard to predict and may repost that here for people like WhiteBus who like to take unfair shots at the NWS/mets, especially since the last several events have been predicted pretty well by the NWS.
Same here. Giant flakes coming down hard. About an inch based on the patio that was clear of snow earlier.Originally posted by RocktheRac:

Strange - thought I posted this at 1:45 pm, before I left, but it didn't "take." Anyway, here's the latest...Originally posted by RU848789:

Mix line appears to still be just NE of Philly, so hopefully we'll get a couple of hours, at least of this close to 1" per hour snowfall and make 3". I was expecting 2-4" before the changeover, so 3" would make me pretty happy. Of course, I'll take more, but expecting the sleet then freezing rain in a few hours, which could make things really slick around here, with temps in the mid/upper 20s. About to head out and drive around a bit.
camden - radar shows you've had a fair amount of precip for the last few hours and reports are that it's freezing rain, since temps are in the 30-31F range in your area. I'd be very careful heading out.Originally posted by camdenlawprof:

Changed over to mostly freezing rain here around 6 pm, after getting 1/4" of sleet, bringing my snow/sleet final total to 3.0". The 2-4" call for most of Central Jersey was pretty good. Looks like we're in for at least 0.2-0.3" of freezing rain, as radar is full down to DE and temps are just 27-28F in this area. Shoveled the sleet by about 6:30 pm and put down salt, so hopefully I at least won't have a sheet of ice on my driveway/sidewalk - will check it later.Originally posted by RU848789:

Snow changed to sleet around 3 pm, just as I was getting back from getting some salt (had to go to Lowe's and get water softening salt as they had no rock salt - same NaCl, though). Measured 2.75" of new snow and it's been sleeting moderately for the last 30-40 minutes. Should at least get to 3" snow/sleet. Also, just shoveled - still pretty light, but will be much heavier for those who wait until the sleet and freezing rain mix in. Still just 25F here, so I'm hoping the freezing rain holds off for a few hours. As of 3:35, snow mixing back in - about 50/50 snow/sleet now. C'mon snow...
Since it won't go above 32F until at least 8-9 am and decisions for closings/delayed openings are typically made by 6 am (there are a couple of school systems that use my emails as inputs for this) and it will likely still be pretty icy on untreated surfaces (especially sidewalks), I would think they'll have delayed openings. By 10 am temps should be above freezing and the sun should be out (at least partly cloudy), so I could see it being mostly ok by then.Originally posted by InGregITrust:

As always my wife is asking....delayed opening tomorrow for the Edison area? I am saying yes probably...your thoughts?
thanks for the heads-up. I got my grocery shopping done before the snow started, then stayed indoors. A colleague who lives in Moorestown says there's a quarter of an inch of ice there. I don't have a class to teach tomorrow (Monday), so I won't hesitate to come in later than I usually do.Originally posted by RU848789:

That's the right call, IMO. Just got in from a trip around town in the Metuchen/Edison area and sidestreets are a mess, as most are unplowed, untreated and icy, as we had about 0.2" of ice accretion on top of the 3" of snow/sleet. The county/state roads, like 27, Route 1, 531, 501, etc., are a bit slushy, but not horrible, as I'm sure they've been treated and have had a lot of traffic.Originally posted by Local Shill:
Basically the whole Route 18 corridor has delayed school openings -Piscataway, New Brunswick, East Brunswick and Old Bridge.

Is it up to the schools?Originally posted by Colonel Henry:
Most schools are not going to have delayed opening tomorrow if they can possibly avoid it due to PARCC testing. You're not supposed to test on days of delayed opening so they'll have to do make up testing which is just another headache. You'll be surprised, schools that are known to shut down or delay for anything will resemble New York City schools the next couple weeks.
