Francis was a good tight end with the Patriots & Niners. RIP Russ.

Geez, terrible news. Very good tight end with the Pats Steve Grogan teams. Sad.

Had his pilots license when he was with the Pats. Small planes are not forgiving. RIP

He was the first one I remember being called “All World” at his position.

Small planes are not forgiving.

Not sure what this means, unless it's a reference to those that only have one engine. Loss of power immediately following take-off is extremely rare, but when it does happen pilots are taught that attempting the ~180 degree turn back to the runway is generally a bad idea because there's too much altitude lost in the turn.

Always a sad day when an aviator goes down.

Damn. Maybe the best TE in his era ?
He was very good, but I have to scour the old memory banks. There were guys like Dave Casper, Raymond Chester, Charlie Young during that time too. Kellen Winslow was a little later but during the end of Russ' era.

yeah, Winslow later. Speaking of the Chargers, Russ was at Oregon with Dan Fouts for a year but didn't see action (injury).
