Riptides are very prevalent this year, seemingly more so than previous years as evidenced by the unusual amount of deaths. If you are going to the beach, make sure to watch for riptides. Peyton Hillis(ex NFL, Razorback player) almost lost his life to one while rescuing his kids.12 people have already drowned in the Florida Panhandle this month alone! Although sad most are because they ignored the warnings or were in unguarded areas! Sunday there were 36 rescue calls in Bay County. People are either stupid or feel invincible. All of these deaths could have been prevented.
You also have to know deal with riptides if your in the ocean or gulf. Riptides are areas of strong exiting waters and you can get out of easily by swimming parallel with the shore not into the shore. Surfers love riptides as the exiting water pushes the waves higher for a better ride in.Riptides are very prevalent this year, seemingly more so than previous years as evidenced by the unusual amount of deaths. The basic tenets of politeness, courtesy, and respect in society have been slowly eroding. The same people flipping off the lifeguards, police and other rescuers will be the same people beckoning their call to be saved when they are dragged out to sea and endangering the lives of the responders they were flipping off. I would think a portion of the deaths could see litigation from the families despite their failure to comply. Too bad for Mallet and the others who died, but if they ignored any no swim postings, they took the ultimate gamble and lost. Maybe Mallet's death heightens the awareness of the dangers and saves a few. Perhaps in addition to red flag warnings, there should be signs stating "Entering the water is off limits. If you are in need of rescue, available personnel have been ordered to not enter the waters due to the high risk of harm and/or death".Police said lifeguards were being ignored/harassed - swimmers were flipping off double red flag warnings.
I don't know how anyone can want to work around general population these days

I doubt the "no rip current" angle because there have been reports of many issues with rip currents in the gulf this season including multiple deaths. Could it be true there were no rip currents.. yes... but maybe since this particular drowning is getting so much attention.. perhaps some public figures are seeking to avoid any kind of blame to avoid lawsuits. You know.. like why was it only a yellow flag and not a red flag if there were rip currents?Apparently no riptides, but 6 people were all struggling at the same time for some reason
