Looking at getting a middle of the road fly rod for surf and kayaking in the sound and bay. Anybody have any suggestions want to keep it in the $300-400 range. Used shorter ones for freshwater but never got any thing near 9ft, gonna probably go with an 8 wt as well. Any suggestions or what to stay away from would be great.

I'll throw in TFO as another option. I fish them in 3 & 5 wts and they have a lifetime warranty. They are priced for the working man unlike Sage, Winston, Orvis, etc.

The 8 or 9 wt seems to be s good saltwater size.

+1 for TFO

I like Sage and St Croix, but would rather use a TFO for half the price.I've got an 8wt signature 9'6" 4-piece that's fast enough to put a 9wt line on. It's been in the salt flats down by the big bend and has done it's job. I've had several TFO's and only had one problem in that time. They replaced it with a new rod, overnighted and told me to throw the old one in the trash. Nice service.Reels are the sticking point with most long-rodders. I'm using an old Old Florida w/ a cork drag, so I'm not up to speed on the latest offerings.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I appreciate the advice. The TFO's look great but I got lucky and a guy that works with me has two sages with Bauer reels and he is selling me his 3 piece sage, Bauer m4 fully spooled with clean floating line and leader along with an assortment of clousers, shrimp, and line cleaner for 300.

St Croix Legend. best salt water rods out there for in-shore and surf models. usually run from $300 to $400. i have two for in-shore and won't buy anything else untill they come out with something new.

eta: didn't see that you put fly rods, but maybe someone will find this useful
